Just had my cc MOT’ed for the second time. Sailed through, but I got in to a discussion on squeaky brakes with the tester. I have nearly done 23K in my car now and he was looking at the pads and said that they were only half worn and so I should be ok for almost 50K without changing. I thought that was pretty amazing. He then was saying that I would have to change my discs at the same time as manufacturers are making harder pads nowadays but softer discs. I then commented about a lot of 206’s suffering from squeaky brakes. He seemed to think that a lot of squeaky braking issues in new cars are due to the discs not being properly run in. Basically for the first 2K miles of owning the car from new it is very important not to brake to sharply as this can cause the discs to very slightly warp and have high and low points in the braking surface which then causes glazing of the pads. The un-uniform disc will then vibrate when the brake is applied and thus cause the squeaking. This sound like a pretty sound explanation to me and seems to answer the question as to why some CC’s suffer with this issue and others do not.
So if you are about to purchase a new cc. My advice is drive it carefully for the first 2-6K miles. I know car sales people say that engines do not need running in, but there are other components of a car that do.

if you have done 23k in 4 years and took it easy for the first 6k miles then i estimate you would have had to take it easy for 1 YEAR where i would have just been 3/4 months
