What a wonderful sport football is! Greece won the European Championship in one of the biggest upsets in international soccer history, beating host Portugal 1-0 in the final Sunday on Angelos Charisteas' 57th-minute header off a corner. The Greeks had never won a game at a major tournament before arriving at Euro 2004 but wound up twice beating the Portuguese, ousting defending champion France 1-0 in the quarterfinal and then beating hot favorite Czech Republic 1-0 in the semis. In European soccer terms, the Greek surprise -- 100-1 shots before the championship -- even eclipsed Denmark's triumph in 1992. No team in a World Cup or previous European Championships have done what Greece have done here.
In other words...greek ATHLOS!!
I heared this on the radio today. They were discussing the problems that Behcam had with the ball an apparently the Portugese manager had complained that his team could have played better if there hadn't been grease all over the pitch ;-)
I was cheering greece all the way, appart from the czech rep game where i thought they dived & cheated a lot. Am popping over to greece to see frinds soon so they will have to put up with celebrating all over again.
Took a bottle of ouzo down the pub on final night and lined shots along the bar for all
