:( Twice now my 15 month old 2.0l has failed to start after standing unused for a few days. First time I called out the recovery people only for the mechanic to turn the engine over first time - I'd flooded it, he said. I'd only tried the ignition a couple of times. Anyway it sounded awful, obviously wasn't firing properly, but he ran it for a while and advised to give it as good hard run. He said he'd disconnect the battery to reset the engine diagnostics and I had no problems getting where I needed to be. No messages came up. A check on the computer at Peugeot showed no faults. That was about seven months ago.

This afternoon, having been away for a week, I go out to the car and it struggles into life after about four turns of the key. Again not firing properly but this time the engine diagnostic light stays on and I get a message saying there is a catalytic converter fault. The handbook says contact your dealer rapidly (rapidly??). On a Saturday afternoon? I left it for a while, found it restarted okay but then up comes another message saying there is an antipollution fault. I tried disconnecting and reconnecting the battery (how good is this for a girlie who barely knows where the oil goes?) but although the engine now seemed normal, the message came up again. I decided to go to Sainsbury's anyway and will ring the mechanics on Monday.

What I really want to know is why a car with less than 13,000 miles on the clock is unhappy about starting? I rely on my car get me from A-B when I want it to. It has no other purpose - well, okay, the CC is very pretty.

Talked with the Peugeot mechanic yesterday who, before I'd finished my tale, butted in with '....anti-pollution fault - is it at 2 litre?' and said that the engine has hydraulic tappet clearances (???) and if the car stands for a few days the oil drains to the bottom and has to be brought back up again. No means of prevention - rev it for a good while at 3000 once it starts. By the time I came home from work last night all the warnings had disappeared. Grr - till the next time.

I went away last week and the car stood for eight days. When I trid to open the car with the plip the horn sounded, but it was constant, not intermittant like the alarm.
Tried to stop the horn sounding by locking the car again - Didn't work
Tried opening the car with the key - Didn't work
Tried starting the car - Horn still sounding. By now half the bloody street is out for a look.
In the end opened the car door and gave the horn a smack. It stopped.

Has not done it since and have no idea why it sounded the horn.
Anyone else had anything similar happen.

Perhaps they just play up because we go away and leave them? It's happy now that I'm blatting it up the A19 every day.

Monday morning this week the car does its 'grrr, I'm not happy about starting routine again' and chugs for a good 10 miles before settling down with the catalytic converter and antipollution fault lights alternating for the next 50+ miles. It had also been a bit flat while driving for a while. It went in to Peugeot on Wednesday and they are to replace all 16 hydraulic tappets as they think they may be sticking open and causing the problem. Keeping the fingers crossed.

When you start the car do you let the fuel pressure build up and let all the check lights go off before you turn the engine over??

mate iwouldnt buy into the monkeys story cos my pug hasnt moved for 4.5 months, i run it once a fortnight and it starts first turn and runs good as ever but you should wait till the fuel is preserised (wait for the whirring noise to stop when you turn the key before starting) as for the tappets i cant see how these would affect the cat sounds like the curse of the multiplex again!

Probably don't do that but then it's never been suggested - on this or any other car I've ever had, and there have been lots. But thanks, will bear it in mind next Friday when I return from a four day trip to London.
