Peugeot have just released their 206 GTi HDi. This is the standard spec 206 GTi but with a 1.6l 16v 110 bhp HDi engine with overboost. The performance is as follows:

206 CC 1.6 0-60 = 10.7s MPG = 40.9 110bhp, 110lbft
206 CC 2.0 0-60 = 8.9s MPG = 35.3 138bhp, 142.5lbft
206 GTi 0-60 = 8.3s MPG = 36.7 138bhp, 142.5lbft
206 GTi 180 0-60 = 7.4s MPG = 32.8 180bhp, 152lbft
206 GTi HDi 0-60 = 9.8s MPG = 58.9 110bhp, 180lbft

Not as fast as I was hoping it would be (I was hoping it would be more towards 9s) but with a bit of chipping you could get it up to the performance of the CC SE and possibly even the standard GTi. And it's got more torque than a GTi 180!

Shame there's no plans to put the engine into a CC :(

It's still not that much torque though. Some of the VAG 1.9 TDis are pushing out over 230 lb.ft.

True, and the chipped 1.9 PD 130 pushes out over 300lbft at about 180bhp which is insane.

A tuning box on a standard HDi 90bhp will increase the torque from 150lbft to 175lbft (at 110bhp) so in theory the HDi 110bhp can easily be taken up to 210lbft/135bhp (assuming the same power gains as with the 90). Then by tweaking the turbo, custom mapping etc I reckon you could easily get well over 250 lbft.

Yes, but in general your average "punter" -- particularly a diesel owner -- doesn't mod their car.

I guess more petrolheads mod their car, but there are an increasing number of people buying diesels for their efficiency and modding potential. I'm not sure if you check out the PGAC site but there's loads of interest in Diesel modding there.

No, I'm not a regular on the PGAC site.

What I can't understand is this: people buy things like BMW 330d Sports (do about 37 mpg) then mod them to produce more power. This makes them less economical. So they're down to sub 35mpg. What's the point? A normal 3.0 petrol 3-series should be able to do 30mpg. Hell, I used to get 28mpg out of the Impreza -- 32 mpg if I tried really hard!

For me, unless a diesel does well over 40mpg it's just not worthwhile.

My Pug 206 is group 7 and I can get an average of 47mpg out of it at about 110bhp (and that's with a heavy foot!)

I chose a diesel for the economy of it and the fact it's low insurance. I wouldn't buy a diesel if a similar spec'd petrol car gave the same MPG, performance and insureance group!

On a run I used to get 54mpg out of a 1.4 petrol Saxo!

I've got a GTi but i'm seriously thinking of getting a diesel for my next car.

Diesels offer great everyday driving performance. Loads of useful mid range power and loads of mpg.
If they can do the 130 odd bhp diesel in the 206 i'd definately buy it. The only thing that puts me off the 2.0 HDi just now is that it doesn't get the wheels, brakes and interior of the GTi. If they can equal the spec then it would sell very well.

I think you need to be doing >20k miles pa before the extra cost of a diesel (purchase price and servicing) makes it worthwhile.

FWIW I did 3 years of 30k pa in an Impreza, because I reckoned that if I was going to spend 3 hours a day driving I should at least enjoy myself. And it was damn safe, particularly in the rain and standing water.

Towards the end of my long-distance commuting days I bought a 2.0 petrol Pug 406 which did about 35mpg. Tried to get a diesel but they were all at least £1000 more. You can buy a lot of petrol for £1000. As it turned out, after a couple of months my contract was terminated so I had no need for the "economical" 406 :rolleyes:

I was giving some thought to the 130 or 150bhp VW engine found in VW/Seats etc. There's a company in Cambridge who then remap it on a rolling road (http://www.jabbasport.co.uk/) and with customers on the GTI forum reporting big gains (one 130 going to 203bhp and over 400lb of torque). Not only that Jabba were also claiming no real change to fuel consumption (I guess on the grounds of the massive torque rise).

I only saw one posting member doing serious miles (30K) after the tune up, engine and gearbox were fine but he had to replace his engine mounts. I think you've got to expect some drivetrain problems with that much torque but it must be kinda fun to drive.

I'd be very tempted on a more-than-3-year-old 150 Seat Leon but not on a new one so maybe one day.
