Y plate means the year of the car. 2001.

To me it means you are extremely original or stupid. As it means you was one of the first people to own a CC. before the hype and crap build quality!! (Oh dear probably started something now.) :lol:

I was going to get a private plate, but personally like the fact that I had one of the first ccs thus my car wears its plate with pride.

Could someone please explain what this Y plate means.

Thanks.
Hi Clarelee,

Excuse the babble, but my best attempt at explaining registration plates is as follows:

The registration system for UK cars used to be on letter prefixes that change every year on 1st August.
Then things changed to new registrations every 6 months on 1st March and 1st September.
Y plate was March 2001 and as we ran out of letters (and various other reasons that I don't understand) things changed from Sept 2001. Now we have 2 letters depending on location of registration, then numbers which now dictate the registration year of the car as follows:

51 = Sept 01
02 = Mar 02
52 = Sept 02
03 = Mar 03
53 = Sept 03

...and so on.

So when someone says they have a Y plate car, it means it was registered sometime between Mar and Sept 01. An example of new registrations would be an 03 car, meaning it was registered sometime between Mar and Sept 03.

Hope this makes sense :D
