Well if he's still in school he'll have to join the lowest rank - "fun lovers in the grass" i think the next rung up the ladder is squaddie and then it goes straight to general.

Hope that helps :D

some regiments have a variation on some ranks
IE:- Royal Engineers have sappers not privates,
tank regiments have troopers
The Guard Regiments have Lance sergents :?
probably some more too but can't remember tho.

I wonder what sappers have if they don't have privates

I left out staff sergeant so here's the list again in order from top to bottom split between officers and others.
Again, depends on the regiment.

Private is also known as Sapper in the engineers, Trooper in the SAS (although an SAS trooper is usually a Cpl/Sgt or somesuch in their regular regiment), Kingsman in the King's Regiment, etc. I think the RA call 'em Gunners as well.

Staff Sergeant is known as Colour Sergeant in the infantry.

The reason Lt Gen is a higher rank than Maj Gen, by the way, is that Maj Gen is short for Sergeant-Major General.

Insignia:

Private - none

Junior NCOs (non-commissioned officers) on upper arm
L/Cpl - One chevron
Cpl - Two chevrons

Senior NCOs on upper arm
Sgt - Three chevrons
S/Sgt or C/Sgt - 3 chevrons plus crown

Warrant Officers on wrist
WO II - crown
WO I - coat of arms

Commissioned officers on epaullettes (shoulder)
2/Lt - One pip
Lt - Two pips
Cpt - Three pips
Maj - Crown
Lt Col - Crown & pip
Col - Crown & two pips
Brig - Crown & three pips
Maj Gen - Crossed sword & staff, plus pip
Lt Gen - Crossed sword & staff, plus crown
Gen - Crossed sword & staff, plus crown & pip
Field Marshal - Crossed staves surrounded by wreath, plus crown

General guide to some main responsibilities of lower ranks (from the infantry perspective)

Private - rifleman, signaller, cook, medic, whatever
L/Cpl - Section 2inC (2nd in Command); 'Delta' fire-team commander
Cpl - Section commander (him plus l/cpl plus 6 men); 'Charlie' fire-team commander (Section is split into 2 fire teams)
Sgt - Platoon 2inC

S/Sgt - Company admin
WO II - Senior Company NCO
WO I - Senior Battalion NCO

2/Lt - Platoon Commander
Lt - Platoon Commander (3 Sections)
Cpt - Company 2inC
Maj - Company Commander (3 Platoons)
LtCol - Battalion Commander (3 Rifle Companies + HQ Company - signallers, intelligence, drivers, mechanics, cooks, medics, stores, etc)
