Test-drove the Megane cc today.

It was a 2litre Dynamic with hands free kit. Hands free means that you have a card instead of a key. The door automatically unlocks without having to press anything. A button on the door handle locks the car. There is no Key to plug in and unlike I initially thought you don’t have to plug the card in anywhere either. Just keep it in your wallet or handbag. To start the car all you need to do is just sit inside put your foot on the brake pedal and press the start button. Nice.

Plus points were the engine and gearbox. Almost as nice to drive as a 206SEcc. Brakes and clutch all do there stuff. It is the six-speed gearbox and engine that makes the car for me though. It feels very willing and fun. The steering was very light too light for my liking. Cant comment too much on handling, but from the roundabouts we went over in lovely Swindon It seemed more than adequate.

Performance: 9.9seconds to 62mph and 127mph. I kind of wonder how the 307cc 180bhp will compare. I was told that Renault might fit a 220bhp in there cc at some stage.

I think you can always tell how good a car drives by the size you feel it is when driving. Although the Megan is a big car. When driving it feels far smaller.

Back seats accommodation is the best yet for a cc. With the glass roof you don’t feel claustrophobic in the back, although you don’t really notice the glass roof in the front seats. The boot is also very wide and therefore far user-friendlier than the 307cc

Styling is individual, but the Megane is definitely better in the flesh than on paper. If you want to pose then get a 307cc Aesthetically it doesn’t tax the eye. If you like to dive enthusiastically definitely try the Megane. Styling wise the Megane is a bit too avant-garde/ Ikea looking for my liking.

Megane bad points: Hate that aerial. No exterior door knocking strips. Back electric window switch for rear seat passengers is awkward to get too. Roof mechanism is very similar to the 206cc. I have not had a problem with my roof so this is a plus point for me, but I assume most people on this site will be a bit concerned about it. Roof operation is also noisy about the same audible level as the 206cc.

The glass roof had a sunblind, but I was expecting it to a bit more substantial and stop sunlight coming in, but it is actually just a bit of perforated material.

Climate control isn't standard. Although all options are better priced than Peugeots.

I found to get a similar spec car as my 206cc is going to cost 20K. Styling options also seem limited. I find myself liking the thought of a mulberry 307cc with light grey leather or black with full red and black leather. The only variation I like in the Megane was black or red car with red leather. Sorry getting personal again. The gearbox isn't going to be to everyone’s liking. My partner found it notchy, but then she doesn’t know how to change gear properly anyway.

All this coming from someone who didn’t see the point of a 6th gear in a GTI6. Hates Variable valve timing engines and doesn’t hold the Renault brand in nowhere near as high acclaim as Peugeot or Citroen. And likes Pluriels. I will keep my 206CC for the moment unless kids come along and then it will be an option. I personally like the fact that when we go out to pubs, clubs or restaurants that nobody asks me to drive because it so tight in the back of my 206. Don’t think I would get away with it if I had a Megane.
