Whats the maximum PERCENTAGE of your take-home pay you'd consider spending on your car?

We're talking about saving up to buy the thing, or the repayments, the insurance, petrol, the lot.

I know people who can't afford a house but buy a decent car! They are spending directly or indirectly 60% of their wages on their wheels!

:shock: Sounds like madness to me .. :shock: but do you think differently?

house=investment (more than possible profit)
car=loss

percentage-wise... i wouldn't go beyond 20%

gawd i'd hate to think about it, but i reckon at least 50% of my take home goes to the car. and it's paid for too !!
but then surly it comes down to nitrests. If you into cars then you are going to spend more money on them, same as if you were nito mountain bikes (as my mate is) and all his income goes that way.

OMG I speak Micra, NOOOOOOO!!! Interests, CB, interests.

I'd hate to think what we pay out. Our insurances are up on 5 vehicles in the space of 4 weeks so in October, it's about 60%!!! Rest of the year, I reckon 20%, as we bought the CC, beetle and Trumpet (=avatar) on the mortgage... God Bless Virgin One hehe :D

I think that it is all relative to how much you earn, if you earn 10k/month and spend 50% on cars you are still left with 5k if you earn 4k/month and spend 25% you are left with 3k

I personally spend around 35% on 11 registered cars because I like cars it is one of my interests but I still put money away and have houses.

If I didn't earn enough for both I would definately put priority in owning a house because if you set yourself you will be in a better position to own a good car in the future. And of course a car would never come before family after all they are machines, they still make them.

Sorry if this sounds a little preachy, It just came out that way.

I can speak micra - FORRIBLE, FUGLY, etc

I probably spend 50% of my income on car, petrol, finance etc, but have definately always put the preference on houses. At the end of the day i bought the cc and a new house last year. The changes in value?:

CC - Down £3,000 to £4,000
House - Up £50,000 (valued 2 weeks ago)

So technically if i couldnt have afforded the cc at the time i could have bought a house for a year then bought 3 cc'c with the profit ;)
