I'm sure there's been a post on this but I can't find it.

Now the hot weather is really on us it is perfect to have the roof down until you get stuck in traffic (and there seems to be a lot of traffic in SW London) and then you start thinking guiltily about actually putting the roof up! As an aside my boss has a SL55 AMG and he keeps the roof up insisting it is too hot (I know!!).

Anyway, I had the blowers on full yesterday at 14 with air directed at my feet and face and they were hot. I turned them off and it was cooler, then I tried the AC and I cooled down a bit. However AC relies on having a enclosed space so presumably having AC on with the roof down is really really bad for fuel efficiency? What does anybody reckon.

Personally I think the car should come with two buttons, one for "it's bloody cold out there but I want the roof down so keep me warm" and one for the complete opposite or at least some advice in the owners manual....

....how did Peugeot ever make this car :D

AC is bad on fuel efficiency whether the roof is up or as if you sewt it to its coldest its always going to be blowing the same temp of air so using to same amount of fuel, i myself just sit there is the AC on all the time and as long as it keeps me cooler i'll worry about fuel latter ;)

Surely if you've got air-con on with the roof down, the poor thing is trying to cool the whole world down to whatever temperature you've set it too? :? A big job I imagine....

As the manual says ' The efficiency of the A/C will be reduced whilst driving with the roof down'!!!!! :hyper:

Whenever I have the roof down I usuall switch my A/C to ECO mode then watch the trip comp miles per gallon reading increase!!!
8)
More powerful than you can possibly imagine

If you set it manually to 14 though the car is never going to get to that temp in the heat so it does matter if its trying to cool the car or the whole world its still going to be working flat out all the time, i think :? :? :?

I set it so it's on just my feet - hot air rises and all that so my feet are great, it;s just the rest of me that's sweltering - but I'm not complaining :D

What about getting a Portable fan!!!
They also say you use as much fuel with the air con on as you would if you opened the window, I suppose this is to do with drag and air flow so havin the air con on cannot make that much differance. 8)

does that make having the entire roof down a real real big waste of fuel? Or is it just the windows, maybe i should always drive with windows up ?

No.

Roof down's fine because the air flows over the windscreen, over your head, and over the boot. (It's even more aerodynamic & therefore efficient with the windstop fitted).

Windows down but roof up is less efficient because you've effectively got a big scoop now. Air comes in through the windows but has no way out again. Also, the actual flow over the surface isn't as smooth.

In order of efficiency, it's

1. Roof up windows closed
2. Roof down, windows up
3. Roof down, windows down
4. Roof up, windows down

Add windstop for better efficiency & put it up for even more.

BTW, whilst we're on this subject, I recall hearing/reading several years ago that removing the wing mirrors actually increases efficiency by something like 10%.
