Does the 6mph limit apply when you are reversing. I am sure that I have gone faster and the roof has still worked?
P.S. Don't try this at home cos obviously you can't see where you are going when the boot lid is up - I just start the cycle off (i.e. the window drop part) as I back into my parking space and so I am usually parked before the boot lid opens.

From what I understand, its about 7mph (not that 1mph makes a difference) and it does seem to apply slightly when reversing.
I would guess it looks at the speedo guage and, as that doesn't go up when you reverse, technically the roof probably doesn't even register that the car is in motion. Where I used to work, we had a long drive way where cars parked up the sides diagonally so I would regularly reverse all the way back down it when leaving and have the roof going down at the same time. I have found that if you drive too fast in reverse, it doesn't beep when the cycle is complete but the roof does still operate. To make sure this doesn't happen, I suppose its just a matter of common sense on the drivers part as to how fast s/he reverses when there is no visibility

I didn't think it did apply - I'm sure I used to go faster than 10kmph backwards when reversing into my drive. No idea now, coz my limit's 30kmph and I'm certainly not going to be reversing that fast too often

I hardly ever reverse by looking backwards, unless the roof's down. Must be the HGV training
