Back in 1971, these three people go to a hotel and to share a room. The manager tells them the room is $30, so they each give him $10. When they get to their hotel room, the manager drops by to explain that a special $25 rate is in place, and returns $5 in ones to them. They each take a dollar, and give back the remaining $2 to the manager for his honesty.
Now, if each of the three people paid $10 and got $1 back, they paid $9 a piece, or a total of $27 (3 × 9). The manager gets $2, so that adds up to $29.
Where is the other dollar?

they do pay $9 each but that includes the $2 dollars given to the manager.
each pay $10
each get $1 back
so each pay $9
or another way ( all figures to 2 decimal places only)
Each first pay $10
special price so each get $1.67 back (one third of $5)
so each pay $8.33 ($10-&1.67)
but decide to give back $0.67 (one third of $2)
so each now have paid $9 ($8.33 + $0.67)
so the total paid out was $27 so where's the missing $3?

sorry no i was right
if i give you £10 and you give me £1 back you have £9
if 2 other people give you £10 and you give back £1 to each of them you have £27 (i.e. 3 x (10-1))
but you dont want just to give back £3 you want to give a total of £5 so you give a further £2 to be share between the three of us .........but we say you can keep and give you the £2 back... so you still have £27
...does that help?

well I though my first post was clearer but a least one person seemed not to get it
the reason there seems to be a pound missing is cos the wrong sum is be carried out
the fact that the hotel manager give back $5 but is rewarded with a $2 tip is ment to confuse. He effectively hands back $3 (5-2)
So if you said the three people paid $30 but were given back $3 it would be clear that the three people had paid $27 (30-3) ie $9 each
I a boring any one yet because I can go on?
