Have seen a GTo imported from Japan and I want it!

has a full service history and its a 3ltr engine, twin turbo, 4 wheel drive, manual, roof lifts off, new dump valve, sports exhaust, sports alloys. about 69k miles, 93 model, big induction kit thing. Pushing out just over 300 BHP the chap reckons.

The price for this, Â£10k! Won't be ready for sale for a month because they have to do some work on it (fix up the spoiler, some chips etc) and register it blah blah.

Should I go for it? Is it worth trading the CC (apparently worth about Â£12k on part ex) for a car that old with that many miles?

Just remember that a car like will will undoubtedly have been driven very hard. I suggest you get a full AA examination (or similar) before buying. Also check out insurance - many companies won't insure imports.

At least your CC is still under warranty so any problems get fixed for free - the GTO is 10 years old and things will definitely go wrong with it. There again, it is Japanese

Well I guess you should wait for Paul's post and he'll know a lot more about this than me but .....

A quick web search shows the Jap versions produce 280BHP (what a silly rule!) while the US/UK 300-320 so the powere you quote is about right (i.e. no silly modifications)

The induction kit/exhaust would make me a little fearful it's been driven by a boy racer but really you take that chance with any car. Can they fax you the history of the car? If it's dealer all the way I wouldn't worry so much. Different car but my mother had a 60K 7 year old (Y reg) UK Mitsu Starion Turbo and although the turbo went it didn't have a single problem over 3 years. Rust was the thing that finally killed it but things have moved on.

You'll need to read up on what it will need doing to when it comes into the country (new speedo? Underseal?) but hope the garage will deal with this? Do you have to commit to it before it arrives in the county? I know the good models can go by the time they arrive.

I went out with a women who owned a VR-4 and although 4 wheel drive it was still rear end happy so don't expect Evo handling.

I guess the final thing is it right for you? It'll be a great GT car but will drink fuel, be expensive to insure and there is always the worry of expensive repairs?

No dont do it.
I work for Mitsubishi and i strongly advise not to.
If it goes wrong you are looking at big money, a transfer box is Â£1500 and the gearbox well probably about Â£2500 upwards.Imports are the worst ones to buy as they have different EGR system to the ones that were made for Europe etc, stay away or if you do get it checked out first at a dealer.

Also, if its imported you can be a lot less treliant on mileage etc. You will basically be buying a car with no history! Is 10K a lot less then they generally go for?

think its 93/94 (not sure as it's on a private plate) with 110 kilmoteres on the clock.

Unless your modifications have also included wedging in a 5.8 litre engine under the bonnet?

cpl extra points about jap imports ....

they are all officlayy 280bhp due to japanese laws. However most of them are more liekly around 300bhp. in the sup's case 325.
Make sure that it was auction category 1 or 2 ... anything less is dodgy and yes if you can get one with a service history go for it.
ohh and if the imported offeres a warrently it's worth taking it.

oh and one other point the cost of running these cars is bloody high. Fro one thing any imort really needs optimax to run correclty. so thats at least Â£50 quid a week on fuel and thats if you drive economically

changed my mind on the scoob....... so was either Evo 5 or 6 but i think the 5 is more hardcore than the 6

The GTO is already in the country. Allegedly it had just come of the truck at the dealers I went to. He says it has a full service history which i thought was good. With the mileage, i thought 69k for a 93 sounded alright (6,900 a year isn't bad, I've done nearly 13,000 on my cc in the 7 months I've had it). It needed some work done on it but the dealers do that before they sell it, he reckoned it would be a month before they had it ready for sale (including registering etc).

The only thing that concerns me is the cost of running and the insurance. Especially as I am currently not employed. I thought Â£10k sounded cheap but I'm reluctant to trade in a brand new car for something so old but I really, really want it.

There are some club websites with meets (http://www.gtouk.org.uk/). If you really, really want one then you could go to one of the meets and chat to people who already own one. If you loose the one in the garage there will be another one.

But if you do get one you should at least make sure you have some many left over to fix problems.
