Hmmm...

No-one is ever gonna agree on this dispute!! People are just gonna fall out over it and it ain't worth it!

For what its worth, I agree with CB, am I correct in thinking that the there is something to do with not being able to take strike action in the HM Forces contracts?

I agree with pretty much everything said here - however, who else could take over in the event of another firefighters strike?

i thought the diddies at No: 10 were able to put through some law that meant fire fighters couldn't strike just like the army ?

about time they did, i can't be bothered listening about all these different professions going on strike the now for more money - they all knew the wages when they took the job.

in my retail career when i started 9yrs ago the working hours ranged between the following hours ..............

sunday: off
monday: 7am - 7pm
tuesday: 7am - 7pm
wednesday: 7am - 7pm
thursday: 7am - 8pm
friday: 7am - 8pm
saturday: 7am - 6pm

now it's ...........

sunday: 7am - 5.15pm (work this every 3rd week)
and 5.45am - 10.15pm the other six days

and if i'm not happy then i can go and work elsewhere ..... just like the fire fighters !

That's right. Further, if you want to leave before the end of your contract, you have to pay *them*.

If you refuse to work in a normal job, the worst you can expect is to be fired. In the forces, you can expect jail - and not the cushy kind of jail either.

Etc.

The armed forces are not just a job. They're a whole life.

Being a neutral in this matter , one point I would like to make , having experience of this myself ,is the job evolving or changing to suit the time/situation.In some cases this can involve additional duties and responsibilities which you may not have agreed to when you signed your job description. These additions can sometimes creep up on you to a point where you are carrying out duties / making decisions that your boss should be taking , which is why he may earn 10k more than you. So firefighters are not complaining that they only receive 22k for fighting fires but they will soon be expected to train for duties normally being carried out by paramedics etc. In casrs where job duties/ responsibilities have changed significantly changes in salary may be warranted.

The firefighters deserve a payrise we all would agree, .
I wouldnt. Didnt we go through the whole supply & demand thing on this ages ago? At the end of the day the firefighters are not exactly in short supply, therefore they will be 'low' paid.

Some of us get paid less than them AND we cant go to sleep at work!

Exactly Mr Awol...its been a much quoted statistic, but there are 50 applicants for one firefighters position, in the army one applicant can have the choice of over 50 undermanned trades.
Taking Tonymags arguments, I agree with you, homosexuality shouldn't downgrade the effectiveness of a fighting force - but in a typically macho testoterone fuelled enviroment, it inevitably does...and yes I agree we are all military men first and tradesmen second but the reality is WAY different. You ask the vast majority of people doing my job if they do it for "Queen and Country" (or in this day and age "Bush and Blair" and you will get a very blunt answer)

Hi all! Sorry to cause such a conflict just because of the job i do. :redhot: Like u could say 4 most jobs, "some one has to do it" and i supose im just one of those people "who has to do it"!! I wish i didnt mention it, then it wouldnt of caused all the unpleasentness! But on the other had its nice to see you have the time and effort to talk about something which was out of your control, aswell as mine!! Its all been sorted now so hopefully all the fuss will die down, and let us do our jobs, and get the satisfaction we deserve! But thank you to all the Coupe Cabriolet fanswho have backed us throughout our campaign! Cheers

Well said matey! And you prove my (as yet unstated) point that the "average" firefighter got caught up in events that spiralled out of all control. Your union and management "fanned the flames" (pun intended  ) and the militant firefighters that appeared being interviewed certainly didn't help your cause. Its refreshing to see that you yourself are showing humility and for that I applaud you...
