I have seen pictures posted into the text of a message, how is this done

You need to host the picture on a webserver smoewhere then put the URL in between [ img ] tags, such as:
[ img ]
http://www.server.com/mypic.jpg [ /img]
But remove the spaces either side of the words "img"

Right-click on the picture, go to "properties", highlight the address (URL) which should start "http"
Then right-click what you've highlighted and click "copy"
Now, go to Post a Reply, write your message, then to insert picture type
[img]
then%20right-click%20your%20mouse%20again,%20go%20to%20"paste"%20and%20click [/img]
