OK I know its not in the Ice section but this strange problem is causing much frustration and I could do with any suggestions before the end of the day.

I had a box standard Pioneer CD player fitted to my SLK by a local radio shop via my dealer before picking the car up 12 weeks ago.

4 days ago I noticed the sound started cutting out and then the sound packed up altogether. The rest of the player seemed to be lit and functioning apart from the sound. I got my local Halfords to check it and they said it was a player problem. After ringing my importer, they referrred me back to the radio shop in order to cut out time and inconvenience going through them (which I could see the benefit of since I didn't want my car left with them for any number of days).

The radio shop seems quite surly and uninterested about it but confirmed the problem was with the set and they swapped the player for me. At first the repalcement unit was working perfectly for 4 days. Yesterday same thing started happening again, sound starts cutting out and my guess is this replacement player will also pack up again shortly.

It seems too much of a coincidence that 2 CD players could develop the same fault, could it be a problem with the cars wiring?

The only other factor was that I changed the removable front facia from a green front to an amber one, being both pioneer and identical facias I didn't think that would cause a problem.

The frustration is that I don't know where the problem lies this time, if its a voltage/wiring problem I asssume that will be a warranty isssue with mercedes which I will have to wait until the 26th Feb before they can investigate with the other warranty issues, a long time without a player or if its the radio which seems unlikely, then I will have to go back yet again to the radio shop that seemed uninterested to start with.

It all seems mighty strange to me,

Yep it does seem strange! It sounds like the amplifier stage of the headunit is failing in both cases, but the rest of the unit is fine (I'm guessing that you just have the headunit & four original speakers, no extra amps etc). Maybe worth checking that thw wires to your speakers are OK - if they're shorting out it could be damaging the amp in your headunit.

If they swapped it with the same identical model, there is a tiny possibility that there is a common fault in that model that's causing this, although I suspect this is a very long shot indeed!

As for the fascia, I know that my kenwood fascia is coded to the headunit, so I couldn't use it on any other headunit of the same model. I don't know if this is an issue in your case... maybe worth checknig with Pioneer?

Sorry I can't be of more help!

Cheers Matt for the input I don't run any extra watts, only the the basic merc speakers and this pioneer CD.

I had originally discounted the change of removable facias from green to amber as it was the same except for colour and as it only has buttons to instruct the player, also it seems to work fine in both cases with the sound only becoming a problem after some days.

Well finally lost my patience, went back to Road Radio, Horsham, told them to change the CD for another which I paid for cos I really didn't have the time to go through a whole lot of testing with mercedes an the radio shop to discover where the intermitant fault was coming from, this way I figured it will probably be cured an if not I'll know the problem is with the car and not the player.

On the way home I turned the CD player on with my lights as it was getting dark.

:yikes:

The CD player's display which I thought was amber cos of the shops lighting is infact red and clashes with the amber back lighting of my SLK.

Back to square one :(

Anyone want a £150 1 day old Sony CD player for £70 + PP??

Its been one of those days :( :( :(
