As you are aware, the usual UK warranty is 3 years. My cc was bought this year as an import from a non Peugeot garage. The car was registered in February 2002. Previously this car would have carried just a one year warranty, but I am told that under new EEC regulations, any imported car will carry an automatic 2 year Manufacturers warranty. I have yet to see evidence of this. Can anyone help or advise please

New EU legislation does state 2 years. Write to the imprter an get them to confirm that in writing. (Though it should have been in teh Terms and Cons?), Alternatively, mail your loacl trading standards and get them to confirm.

Yes, it's true. Euro regs stipulate a two year manufacturers warranty on products like cars since Jan 1st this year. The date is the date the car was PDI'd and this can been seen as a stamp in the service book.

The best people to check the terms of the warranty are Peugeot UK, not the import agent. He will know about the warranty, but not necessarily have documentary proof.

Again, check your service book, that will contain the warranty statement although it's quite feasible old stock books are still in circulation 7 months after the change.

BMW and Audi actually implemented this in Nov 01, but the law applied from Jan 1st, so Peugeot and others will have fallen in line then.

Previously the 3 year warranty consisted of a 1 year mfr's and 2 year Peugeot UK top up. Now they only have to top up for one year, their liability has halved, so technically the price of UK sourced cars *should* have been reduced slightly ;)

Downunder, warranty is for 2 years. Looks like I'm gonna need all of it too.

I had my car for only 2 weeks, already in Pug garage for one week, I wont see it for another week.

Derek, because previously, Peugeot UK paid Peugeot France x Euro for the car with a one year warranty and then covered the car themselves for the remaining two years. Now they pay Peugeot France x Euro for the car which comes with a two year manufacturers warranty by European law, so Peugeot UK now only have to front a one year warranty. Their risk, and therefore their costs, have halved. The final price to the consumer has not changed, so Peugeot UK are making more profit on each car sold since the two year rule came into effect Jan 1st, hence my question why the price had not been cut.

Manufacturers generally charge £300-400 a year for their warranty, so how about a £250 price reduction?

No, of course not, this is "Treasure Island" as the car manufacturers like to refer to us.

it's worth remembering that when the 3 year warranty increased from 1 year the price never went up so we have no real need to expect a decrease now.

But the improved warranty deal was in the face of competition from imports and Far Eastern manufacturers. The competition is still there, via the import route, but still the UK concessionaires are greedy.

Consider that a private importer can save, say £3,000 by going to an authorised Peugeot dealer in Europe and paying retail. That dealer still has his normal margins and so is happy with the deal. I don't imagine that Peugeot UK pay more for their cars than that Euro dealer does, in fact most likely a lot less. Assuming the UK dealer is on the same sort of margins and incentive as his Euro mate, then Peugeot UK are pocketing that £3,000 for every CC they sell in the UK.

The bias is due mainly to fleet customers who wanted a system to maintain the 3 year old values on their trade ins. The fleet firms pay "import" prices for their UK cars at the expense of the private consumer and now that many people are moving out of company car schemes, the number of private buyers is increasing. Consumer pressure should stop the greed in the UK, we needn't feel sorry for the distributors!

I have spoken with the Trading Standards people in Central London who rang me back after a bit of investigation.

They say that there is a general misunderstanding over this EEC directive.

They say that currently under UK law the buyer has a 6 year period under which he can go back to the manufacturer should the product be defective notwithstanding any specific warranty supplied with the product.

It appears that in Europe this period has only been one year, therefore the EEC are saying that there must be a minimum 2 year period under which the consumer can claim against the manufacturer. (the UK is currently 6)

Basically nothing has changed for the UK. The specific warranties are those referrred to in the handbook ie 1 year for imports, 3 years for cars via Peugeot UK

UNLESS YOU KNOW OTHERWISE !!

I thought you only got 1 year warranty on an imported vehicle. I have heard no different in work & I work in the Motor Trade for a Finance company. Also this is what the dealership told me where I got the car from so I bought an extra 2 years warranty with them for £450 with cash back of £380 if I don't use it. Luckily I am still in the manufacturers warranty as I have a leaky roof/boot (car is only 3 month old)
I think I will have to look into this further with people in the know at work. Will let you know what they say.

Emma, I'd be really interested in hearing what you found. I imported my CC in December 2002 from France directly from a Peugeot dealership (saving several thousand - it was easy and I'd recommend everyone do this!) and it came with a 2 year manufacturer's warranty (I have my original correspondence with them about this so I assume this is genuine and the website I got the dealership details from also quoted two years). I then topped up the two years to three with an extended warranty from Peugeot UK. If there's anything suspect about this I want to know!!

I've used my warranty 3 times already (don't ask) and had problems the first time when they demanded proof that the car was genuine - I had to give them the conformity certificate and the invoice which they photocopied. (I think they wanted to know how much I had paid for it, actually.) No problems with the warranty/dealership since then.

Anyone else out there imported theirs directly from France?

Biscuit - I got mine from Trade Sales in Slough. On the documentation it lists a dealer in Asnieres, France so it is a French import. Incidentally - how much was your car (in Euros), plus all the duties/ taxes etc? How long to deliver?

I paid 14690 all in (tax disc etc) for 2.0SE with all the trimmings - leather etc. I rang on Thursday and collected the car on the Saturday morning.
