Number Plates

Do you know what the cheapest way to transfer a registration number is?

I have got mine on my 106 at the mo but I want to put it on to retention ready to put on my CC when it arrives. What forms do I need? I've looked on the DVLA site and it wasn't much cop to be honest.

All advice gratefully received!

if u go along to ya dvla office (or even ya local post office i think?), all the forms r in there, it costs Â£25 to keep ya plate on retention 4 a year, but Â£80 extra if ya taking it off another car to put on retention

p.s and that Â£80 also now includes putting it bac on ya next car i think, cos before u always had to pay the fee twice

I can never remember which of the many forms applies to me so I always ring either Swansea or the local DVLA office up to ask them to send me the correct forms to fill, they always do.

I've always transferred mine from car to car for the Â£80 fee but I think you might also have to ensure if you applied for the plate on retention that its not for more than 12 months otherwise you could loose the plate by default if its not renewed.

when did you need to pay it twice ? i have had private plates for 7 years and have never done that.

you pay Â£80 and put it straight on another car or a further Â£25 to put it on retention. putting it on a car later is free and always has been as you have already paid the fee.

I did mine back in November.

Your options are:

Transfer your number straight to another car - Â£80

Put your number on retention - Â£80 + Â£25. To put it back on your new car afterwards - Â£ nil.

To keep it on retention after 1 year - Â£25 per year. To transfer to a car later on - Â£nil.

You can do it by post or visit your local DVLA in person. You will need your registration document (new and old car), MOT certificate (if applicable) and a note of the serial number of your road tax.

If it's already on retention, you can give the dealer the certificate and they will register the new car with your personal number.

If you're going to your local DVLA, check out their times that you can do transfers - it takes about an hour, so they won't do them too close to when their office closes.

it takes about 3 minutes :rolleyes:

they......

1. check your documents
2. give you a new tax disc
3. tell you to change the plates asap

done it a few times at the dvla office in edinburgh. normally waiting in the queue is the longest bit.

when i was at ecosse and went to the dvla in edinburgh last week i was surprised how super speedy they were

but before when ive been to bristol and reading, they r a nitemare, u can end up queing for over an hour, and then, u can get to the front of the queue and they tell u to go away cos they r off 2 lunch

In Reading, it took an hour. It depends on their workload. They are so busy, they will only let dealers do three transfers at a time.

Nottingham is quite good for transfers, normally its while you wait.

They did once make me wait for a day because there computer system crashed. I kept quiet as I think my firm do their computers

workload shouldn't have anything to do with it - 1 person + 3 minutes = transfer done.
