I have a question to do with watts and so on as far as the relation between amps and speakers/subs go. Trung may be my best bet on this one :)

A lot of you seem to go for the Kenwood 959 amplifier which looks nice but I like to be a bit different. I'm maybe looking at the Kenwood KAC-PS650D. As a 5 channel amp, this gives 4x60W + 1x200W RMS. In addition, I'm looking at a pioneer TS-W1201DVC sub or Rockford Fosgate RFD2212 sub (the Pioneer is £40 cheaper, are they better than RF's???). Both of these have 500w RMS. Now, does that +1x200W mean power for the sub and, if so, does that mean I've still got 300W of power that the sub isn't using? I'm curious about the same thing for the other speakers too. If I fit some front and rear that do about 100W in the back and 200W in the front, does that mean I'm wasting power as the amp is 60W per channel??????????

I know very little about this stuff but want to get the best I can for my money without being swindled by some spotty chap who just wants to get as much money as he can out of me. Can anyone fill me in on all these figures etc???? Does what I've described sound like it would be a good setup? Obviously a good HU helps but I'm going to start at the back and work my way forwards if you get what I mean :)

Thanks in advance guys.

You are correct in that the 1x200W refers to the sub. If the figures given are RMS then the peak power could be higher - check what it is.

Speaker power ratings are usually given as peak figures. You need to be absolutely sure that the peak power of the amp will not exceed the peak power of the speaker and, preferable, that the speaker power is a bit higher than the amp peak power.

OK. well, the given wattage for the subs are RMS so that means I have a lot of room to spare. Is 60Wx4 +200wx1 a lot for an amp? I see the 959 is about 40-50wx4 +120wx1 (or near that anyway). basically, is it gonna kick the way i want it to?
