I need some advice on fitting this - it looks like the holes will be too close to the edge when I drill them. And do I drill straight through the leather gaiter?

yeah i done mine.
i used a power screwdriver and it was fine as long as u can drill straight
altho it is veryyyyy tricky. i suggest putting masking tape over the holes when u screw em in so if ya do slip by accident nothing gets scratched!!!
If ya need more help PM me
