I drove to Swansea from Swindon and back on Sunday night (empty motorway, great!!) I used about 1 and a quarter tank of petrol and its about 240 miles in all, pretty good seeing as i was doing a great deal faster than average. (never got much below 90)

I drove back from Swindon to basildon yesterday and used almost a whole tank doing considerably less speed. got to 90 once or twice averaged about 70. That journey was 130 miles.

Does any body have an idea of what spead is the car is most economic?

:?: :?: :?:

Depending on the temperature then between 55 and 60 and again at around 75 - 80 once the engine has pulled it's weight. Eco figures hover around 45 mpg (1.6). Cold weather though means lucky to get into the high 30's. Still dismayed at the small petrol tank though. I wish I had the range of my 306. 650 miles on a tank of diesel.

Dombake,

Does your CC have the trip computer on the display panel? (Not sure if this was a multiplex model addition or a 2002 spec or something)

If so, just set it to continuously display the instantaneous fuel economy, and you'll get a very good idea of how your driving affects the mileage.
MMMMMmmmmm Diablo!!!!!! :D :D

Also depends on the rpm.... the lower you keep them, you get a better economy...

low revs is only if you dont load the engine, eg 20mph in 5th - lol

There is some new research that suggests that if you rev high and quick into gears that it will save more feul than the old way.

The jury is still out on this method - except its more fun :)

I've been to Birmingham & back 3 times over two weeks (Motorshow, Classic motor show and one trip for work) 256 miles round trip each time. Each on one tank of petrol, with some to spare. If you accelerate like a banshee you can watch the "miles left in the tank" display (on the 2.0 SE) plummet quicker than a whore's draws. It's not so much the speed you go that drinks the petrol (I always travel @ 70 mph Officer, honest ;) ), but how heavy you accelerate. It can while away many a journey trying to get the miles left in the tank to match the miles you've got left to drive without having to stop and fill up.

Also, they say you shouldn't go past 3 clicks of the petrol pump - some pumps click much sooner than others - I reckon on each £1 petrol increasing the display by 10 miles. Any thoughts?
