Drove to me usual Friday night Indian, park outside, curtain twitches, several waiter faces appear at the window, they all come out to peek, even the spamspam staff, then all the Chinese Takeway staff join in from up the road, I was in serious danger of not eating tonight

Well I thought I'd write a quick report about the SLK I imported for those that might be interested in a future purchase.

Imported SLK 200 (2.0L) 6 Gear Manual. Solid Black, Black interior, Cloth Seats £23,000. Sourced and delivered within 7 days (UK dealer price would have been £25,080 with a 6 month wait)

Teething Problems

Well after speaking to Rob I didn't think I'd escape teething problems and I haven't, problems spotted so far after delivery:

1). Left indicator doen't automatically return except on sharp turns.

2). Right on 90 mph wind wistle starts from the drivers window seal where it meets the roof.

Annoyances?

My only annoyance is the arrogance of Mercedes for not including air conditioning/climate as standard on the 200 model while most less expensive cars get this as standard kit. This becomes even more astounding considering they include important safety features: electric stability program (ESP) ABS & BAS.

Looks & Feel

The long bonnet, solid black paintwork, black interior and retro round dials softly lit in amber and aluminium metal consol, all give this car a classic ambiance and a mixture of roadster tourer feel.

Attention to Detail

Detail is good even down to the well designed lozenge shaped key fob which looks a work of art, it hids the key shank which automatically flicks out at the touch of a button, much like a flick knife.

Engine

The 163 bhp engine doesn't dissapoint with its initial punchiness at low revs and rapid pace and growl at higher revs, which belies the fact that this is only a 2.0 litre car.

Handling

Good. Steering responsive and gives good feedback. Car drives round corners like its on rails in the dry but feels a bit twichy in the wet at higher speeds (though the "nanny" safety feature ESP program is supposed to lock any one of four wheels and cuts power to the engine to stop you from getting seriously out of shape).

Roof!

The roof wurrs smoothly and silently up and down without fault, no creaks or groans as I had on the CC, but there's no warning beep (unlike the CC) to tell you its completed! Instead the roof button stops flashing to let you know the process is finished.

Overall Impressions

Apart from those 2 teething problems the build quality is impressive, the car still has looks after 6 years and performance seems remarkable considering my initial scepticism about buying a smaller 200 (2.0 litre) model to fill a gap until the 2.3 litre in 2004.

I would definitely recommended this car as good value with the imported price tag of £23,000.

mmm took the new car out for a spin tonight (sigh), I loved my CC to bits and nothing will ever change that, but I have to say the new SLK is a different car all together, it handles sooo well round the tightest of bends, never getting out of shape, and with great torque from the Kompressor engine even in 4th its just so much fun to drive. Just a dab on the accelerator relegates the adverage boy racer sticking to the bumper to a spot in the rear view mirror. Well worth the few thousand extra in my view if anyones thinking that way. :D
