It seems that there is a rising incidence of fires being caused by broadband internet connections using USB to ethernet connections.

It seems that for some reason it is causing motherboards to overheat. The UK firebrigades are currently monitoring the increase in these events and are working with hardware manufacturers.

So be safe and dont leave your PC on unattended for long periods whilst on the net.

I take it a 10/100 card with an RJ45 connection is fine?

I often leave my PC on overnight - downloading, you know how it is!

Just thinking about it, I take it this only occurs in older PC's, those not designed with broadband speeds in mind?

If it is true then I am going to use my PC in the car, with all the leaks there is no way a fire can start!

I dont use the broadband modem (stingray lookin thing) as it hogs between 10-30% of the processor at times.

Ive bought an ADSL router which replaces the modem and gives fast-ethernet LAN ports so that you can connect multiple PC's together and share the bandwidth. Also doesnt take any processing power away
