Exhaust Manifold

While my car was in having the bootlid lock fixed (see Roof Alarm thread under Roof Problems) I asked them to look at a tinny rattle coming from the engine. The rattle only occurred whilst in gear and between 2 and 4,000 revs.

I had already had the engine cover tightened and padded because it use to rattle annoyingly, but this sound was more mechanical. They put it down to a problem with the exhaust manifold (they weren't specific about whether it was loose or cracked) and have ordered the parts to fix it?

Anyone had anything similar?

Apparently it is a common problem on the GT/GTi, and Peugeot usually fix it under warranty. Its caused by bad welding where the four chambers combine into one. The welds fail, and the metal bits rattle together. Hasn't happened on my GTi, but I've had the manifold replaced with the Devil performance one to match the exhaust system.

took our's for its first service two weeks ago and asked them to see if they could listen out for a tapping noise from the engine, needless to say they couldnt hear it so they had it back in overnight as it always happens when it cold starts they heard the noise but couldnt find where it was comming from. In the end they downloaded it from some problem database and its a crack in the manifold, quite a common problem apparently!.
Now our baby is going in for a new one on tuesday
ps. the printout states that the problem occurs around 10,000 miles and they are to replace the manifold

Sounds like the same problem as my post under "wheezy engine" but with a slightly better description. As I've got about 1000 miles to go before the first service will this cause problems if I leave it? I've just done 1000 miles around Cornwall whilst on holiday last week and it doesn't seem to have done any harm, but it would be good to make sure.

we took it in for a service about two weeks ago and have since done the same mileage around cornwall and it's got a lot worse.
power is down and it's now very noisy so im trying not to use it much untill tuesday when it goes in. we had only done 4500 miles when it went for the service but it had been noisy for around 1000 miles but we thought it was the plastic covering and would wait for the service but now we know it wasn't.

Mine has gone in to have the manifold sorted today. I have also noticed over the past couple of weeks that I have been down on power and I am hoping that this is a symptom of the manifold problem.....we'll see later

P.S. The car has done 8.5k miles and I would estimate the problem started around 500 miles ago

Ive noticed recently something similar, ours has done 6,000 miles and has started to make a noise almost like pinking but more mechanical. It seems most pronounced when accelerating. No apparent loss of power yet. Could this be the same thing?
Need to get it sorted this week as I start a new job next Monday and there are no Pug dealers near by.

I would get it checked out - particularly since Jon said it was a known problem with the GTi engine (thanks jon!).

The problem on mine only occurred under acceleration and it has got progressively worse - on first inspection the dealer said it was the engine cover but I was persistant because it sounded more mechanical as opposed to just the plastic cover rattling.

I wasnâ€™t sure that it was bad enough to take to the dealer yet but booked it in for today, expecting them to find no faults yet but guess what? The manifold has got a crack in it. They have one that a customer ordered some weeks ago but hasnâ€™t collected so I can have that otherwise I would have to wait â€˜some considerable timeâ€™ until they got a manifold from the factory. It will be ready for me tomorrow, not that I will be in any fit state to drive after my leaving do at work so I pick it up on Saturday.

if your going to get the manifold it's worth paying the extra for the stainless steel one from devil or are you getting the new part foc under the warranty?

Got the car back from the manifold repair. Dealer said they replaced a gasket and clamp as well (means nothing to me, presumably these were ancillary to the manifold).

The car seems fine and it sounds a lot better. The Performance seems back to normal, but to be fair this could be physchological....

Incidentally I tend to let the engine rev quite high i.e. I thrash the b*lls of it when appropriate

) - could this have contributed to the problem? Thoughts

Out of interest, did the dealer identify the problem themselves or did you have to prompt them? With me, like everything so far at the dealers it took them 3 visits to identify the problem.

I had to take mine in to get it checked out as it wasn't due for its first service for a while - and it's a good car other than this so doesn't go for regular visits to the dealer like some. A mechanic jumped in the car with me, took it round the block and immediately agreed that the manifold needed replacing (+ gasket clamps etc) - and although it took close to a month to order the parts it's now sorted. It's good to be free from rattles at last + get a bit more oomph back in the engine.
