First issue in nearly 12 months of ownership

Post by Johnnyb60 »

Hi again,
I was wondering how long it would be before I encountered a problem, and after nearly 12 months of ownership the dashboard lit up indicating a problem with the ABS.
The traction control light also came on.
It's happened a few times now, anything between 5 to 15 miles of driving the car.
When I restart the car after my journey to wherever I'm going, the warning lights have gone off only to reappear again a few miles down the road.
Tonight we used a scanner to identify the problem and it came up with the code C1331 which translates to the wheel sensor not working on the driver's front right side.
So it's either (in my guessing) the sensor needs replacing or the magnetised tooth reluctor wheel needs replacement.
Not bad motoring I suppose for a year ,and a 21 year old car..
All the very best,
Johnny

First check the reluctor wheel is clean. Sometimes its just encrusted with gunk.

Thanks Ian for the good advice.
This weekend I will get the wheel off and give it a good clean up and let you know the outcome.
Kind Regards,

Hi Again ,
A quick update,.
After inspecting behind the front wheel, I've spotted the problem.I found the reluctor wheel has cracked open resulting in the two open ends of the crack looking staggered as well of the obvious crack..
I can't remember if I've mentioned this before, but I have up until recently been experiencing a strange vibration on the front brakes when braking and low speed.
It kind of felt like a pulsating affect and only happened now and again.I also felt it was more towards the front drivers side . This makes sense now.The reluctor ring was damaged and it was triggering the ABS to come on as it was sending false readings to the cars brain.
I'm hedging my bets the reluctor ring is an easy job to remove and replace.
Checking the other other side it looks like it's been done relatively recent as it looks in better overall condition.
All the very best,
Johnny

That sounds like a classic wheel speed sensor issue, Johnny - not bad at all for a 21-year-old car! Given the intermittent nature and the specific code, I'd put my money on the sensor itself being the culprit rather than the reluctor ring. They're generally the first to fail and thankfully the more straightforward fix. Hopefully, a new sensor gets your ABS and traction control back to normal!

Hi Samlevy0515
It turned out to be the reluctor ring had cracked.
Once replaced the symptom of the brake pedal slightly pulsating and the warning lights disappeared.
As you say not bad for a 21 year old car.
Prizing apart the ball joint took some serious levering with a scaffold pole but in the end it relented.
I managed to fit just a new reluctor ring instead of replacing the whole drive shaft thankfully.
Kind Regards,
