Rear driver's side window

Post by Lewk5012 »

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone could help... yesterday I decided I'd make the most of the British sun (never know when you're going to see it again) so put the roof down but at the end of the drive when I put the roof back up the driver's side rear window wouldn't fully close. It goes about 3/4 of the way up and stops. The weird thing is when the roof is down and I put the windows up it fully closes so i doubt somethings blocking the mechanism but for some reason with the roof up it just wont close. It's an 04 model I've had for about 5/6 months and never had any problems with the roof/windows until yesterday of the blue. Any solutions and quick fixed are much appreciated

Hello, Lewk!

The rear windows work through a mechanism hidden behind the two trim panels at both ends of your passenger bench. Getting to it is a bit of a pain, you'll have to unscrew the bolts keeping the bench in place, pull out the sits and unclip the panels. You may find yourself facing a thin sheet of paper that is there to dampen noise and vibration and to keep dust out of the system. Several other bolts are also in the way.

With use, the motors pulling the cables may get "tired" and eventually fail. If you hear rattling while operating your windows, the steel cables or the plastic parts used to keep them together may also be damaged.

Since you mention how the problem only occurs when the roof is up, obstruction seems to be the most likely cause. I had (still have, actually) a similar problem: the external rubber seal on my driver side rear glass - the one running along the window and ending with sort of a hook shape - gets caught in the booth when the roof is on its way up. When I try to pull up the window, the glass will rub against the rubber and eventually stop the motor from completing its cycle. What I have to do is hold the hook end of the trim with a finger while the roof comes up.

Colder temperatures may shrink and harden rubber, affecting the trim's elasticity. I'd suggest you check that first.
