Engine stopped - Roof half-way going down

Post by kenzo »

Hello cc-ers. I haven't been on for a while for the simple reason....everything has been perfect with Mrs K's 206cc....until today.

It was time for its monthly roof raise and lower exercise. I started the car, unlatched the roof, lifted the roof-down switch and the side windows operated perfectly and boot opened as usual. The roof got about a third of the way retracted, then the engine stalled (I had it in gear with the clutch held down, and I mistakenly let the clutch pedal up.
I switched off the ignition to restart (as advised in the manual) but although the engine started up fine, the roof would neither go down, nor back to closed.
Now it looks like the boot-lid has lost its pressure? and is now resting on the partially-closed rear section of the roof.
Fortunately the car is now stowed in a friend's lockup garage out of harm's way.

Is this something that can be fixed? Or is it off to the dealers?

any advice will be much appreciated.
Thanks
Kenzo

And for anybody else coming across this thread......
Best practise is to start engine and without touching anything else (not even the heater controls)-then complele the roof cycle in one go.

Whoops - never switch off the ignition while the roof opening/closing sequence is in operation. (Pages 4 and 74 of the owners manual).

Where does it say switch off the ignition to restart? I take it that was an involuntary reaction without thinking, rather than after referring to the manual. Easily done but the 206cc is rather unforgiving at times.

I think I'd take it to your local dealer to get the roof reset. Even our local independent specialist won't touch the roof, but sends the car to the main dealer.

My understanding is that few main dealers have the expertise to fix the roof, but they are all prepared to have a go at your expense.

If you can't sort it yourself, the experts are http://www.frenchdiagnosticservices.com ... cabriolets

Hello cc-ers..... just a quick "Thank You all" for your advice and suggestions. I read and re-read the manual and the handbook, and as I needed a little reassurance I contacted a good friend (Peugeot expert without equal) and he talked me through the procedure on the 'phone.
Convinced we could at the very least get the roof closed, me and my brother took it slowly, step-by-step and got the roof to close.
Then having latched it, we had some difficulty getting the lid to re-latch to the boot. Again we tried different combinations with the latches and the white pins and bingo, the lid latched and the boot closed. The handbook says to unlock the white pins, turn them down and re-insert, then go to the Peugeot dealers. We realised that if we tried to test-stow the roof, the pins would prevent the lid from rising so we opened the boot and re-located the pins back to their original position.
Finally...the big test...we unlatched the roof, the chimes sounded, so far, so good. Raised the roof switch...everything worked as it should. The roof stowed and successfully re-raised and re-latched.
To sum up....ecstatic, relieved (and from Mrs K, reprieved !)

Thanks again folks.
Ken

Glad you sorted it.
One other thing to mention- You say you were in gear clutch down while operating roof.
The roof cycle has to take around a minute, and those clutches don't live a long life if you spend excessive time with the clutch pedal down. The release bearing cuts through the diaphragm fingers and breaks up. It's a weakness with the Peugeot clutch kits as the release bearing is part plastic.
Cheers Col.

Well done Ken. Glad you managed to sort it yourself.

Good advice from Capncol too - as usual.

Thanks for that warning....... my missus had a new clutch fitted last year as the old one was starting to slip a little on occasions (like when accelerating hard in lower gears). After nearly b***ering the roof, the last thing I want to do is burn the new clutch out. It's still too cold to live in the dog kennel :)
