Good old french wiring....HELP PLEASE

Post by deankendall »

Hi all. New here as a member but I've been on the site often just to soak up the wisdom :big-grin:

Aaanyway...So my mrs had decided she wanted a 206cc (2001, 1.6, NFU, ME 7.4.4) against my warnings of electrical faults and being stranded as it's her "dream" car and it was cheap. I said it'll be cheap for a reason and she said it's fine, the cheap price is down to the roof "suddenly" not working anymore and she was told by the prev owner that it was simply a microswitch, pennies to buy.....

Turns out it's slightly more than a switch. Funny thing is I have a PP2000 and could have checked it before she handed over 300 quid to someone whom was no doubt laughing. Anyway, I sorted that, it was......*drumroll* the wiring in the boot (which had been attacked by someone with a cowboy hat, time on their hands and some green tape). Still not right, but it goes up and down and doesn't have that new government warning beep that stays on over 10mph to remind you you're a reckless road hazard and to slow down.

Another thing, the screen on the dash (mpg, clock etc) didn't work. Pulled the top off, was disconnected. Plugged it in and hey presto, it works! But it had no good news. ABS fault, braking fault, airbag fault, passenger a/b disabled (and its not). She's got a right gem here. And only 40k miles too.

New battery on it, replaced after she got the thing to rule out that.

Starts and runs completely fine, lights and indicators ok.

On to yesterday.....
She calls me up, says car won't start, I need to come fix it cos she has work. So I leave work, to go home and give her a lift to work cos I'm under the thumb and do as I'm told
I get in and it's cranking but not firing, not even a tickle.

-immobilser/alarm light is flashing very rapidly in the hazard button
-seems to be getting fuel when cranking as the plugs were wet
-no spark at all. Tried 3 different coil packs known to be working
-Lock the car with central locking and press deadlock button and the crazy flashing stops. Press the unlock button again which operates the c/l fine and it starts back up (the flashing led, not the car).

-PP2000 gave me a load of codes about the butterfly valve coherence, s/c/t/g and open circuit. Changed it for a known working one, no joy. It does made a semi-wild clicking sound on and off for a while when the ignition is on which seems odd. It can stop for a min then start again. Also gave me a cam sensor code so I swapped that for a known good one. Still no. I knew it would be something to do with the wiring but I had those parts to hand and its a quick job so gave it a go. I try to clear the codes and it comes up with "no communication" or something similar. With Delphi/Autocom it says it's cleared them but in fact hasn't. I can't code or modify the ecu at all, just read codes and other non-useful stuff like part # and what not.

-Pulled ecu to check for water, all plugs seem in good condition (visual only, some :censored: robbed my multimeter recently, haven't got around to getting a new one). No fuses blown in either e/bay or under steering wheel.

That's about as far as my Peugeot electrical knowledge goes. I assume it'll be something corroded or fallen off or cut by Renault spies, but where do I start? As I said at earlier in this ongoing waffle, there's no spark but fuel. Dash lights come on ok (other than the oil temp jumping around for a while) including the eml. I initially thought immobiliser, but it knows I've left the key in so it's recognised. No diagnostics can connect to it to change things, but it'll let me read. Also said a load of stuff about "invalid values, not configured" or some such when you're in the menu regarding ecu/bsi coding and types of components (gearbox type, alternator type etc) and it won't let you change any of those vaules either.

Any help would be veerrrrrry much appreciated because she is doing my :censored: head in about it  . I'm a part time mechanic and so am fine with nuts and bolts, but electrical fault finding isn't my forte. I have already reset the Bsi on numerous occasions and it makes no difference.

PS: Earth seems fine from the body to the engine, cleaned it all up.

I have edited your swear words as we have a lot of women readers. Please be moderate.

Can you give the exact codes you were getting?
Also gave me a cam sensor code
1.6 doesn't have cam sensor. Any codes pointing to that is usually crank sensor. Have you changed that?
Cheers Col.

That seems to happen a lot Gazza, but people forget to mention that bit.
