Change like for like. It's much easier.

It's the electronics that cause the problems. If you fit (for example) an engine with Delphi electronics to a car with a Bosch system, it won't work without modding. Anything can be done. People have even put V6 into 206's, but for simplicity stick with like for like.

Physically there are two: the 137/138 hp and 180 hp.

(If you can get a complete 180 engine for £100, buy it and sell it on! ;) )

The 180 won't fit without a lot of mods as intake and exhaust are very different. I think gearbox and driveshafts might be too. Plus then you have insurance issues.

But there are several 137/8 engines. The engine codes starting RF should help find the right engine.

The 2.0 16v cc is based on the gti so its identical RFN, the 180 is a different animal.

Just out of interest, if the GTI has the 137/8, which car(s) has the 180?
