After reading every post as a visitor on roof issues, I cannot find an answer to a couple of questions, sooo here goes.
When I release the roof catches I get the bong. Will I only get the bong if both release catch sensors are working properly or if one is not working will i still get the bong ?
I pull the switch to activate the roof down procedure. All the windows drop and the pump makes a whirring sound, no clicks and nothing else, except the alarm goes off to announce the is an issue. I've checked the
boot cover sensor and that clicks, I have also checked the boot catch and that also appears to be OK. The white clips are in the up location. I have also checked the pump brass screw is tight. What next, new pump or ecu or something else ?

Has it stopped working suddenly or have you bought the car like it? Could be low on oil or if its been tampered with the hydraulic lines could be connected wrong.
Your windows are dropping so its nothing to do with the roof catches or the boot blind

Afaik, the windows will not lower, nor will the pump start, if a roof catch switch is stuck, so the problem is elsewhere.
Have you checked the hydraulic fluid level ?

I bought the car like it. The guy said "I think the pump is the problem", but I wasn't confident if you know what I mean.
Good news about the roof catches and boot blind though, one less issue.
Yep, the oil level looks OK, if anything it's just over the limit.

When the pump whirrs does it start quietish then suddenly go loud and lower in pitch like its struggling? or just a feint whirr like its free running?

My take from it is that the problem probably lies in the "electrical valve" shown in the video. If it does not operate, the boot lid catches do not open, so the boot lid cannot open, so nothing happens.

Check the pressure relief valve is nipped up ( the one you use the allen key on) If it's loose you will lose pressure.

Ok, a modicum of success. I took off the the electrical valve and ran a current over it and it clicked but no obvious movement (should there be ?), check the pressure valve and that was good too. So , released the roof clips and got the bong, but this time the boot lifted and the roof started to raise but stopped halfway. Some progress.
What next ?

If the boot lid lifts, the electrical valve must have functioned.
The video states that, if the boot lid takes too long to lift, the roof will stop. Watch from about 7.20. It tells you to lift the roof operating switch again. Did you try that?

Couple of questions.
What is the electrical valve doing, is it twisting or going in/out ?
What would be cause the roof slow to lift?
I'll give the main hinges on the roof a spray with silicone lubricant to ensure there's no stickiness.
Quite satisfying. What should I do to keep the roof mechanism in good working order ?

That's great news! I'm not sure how the electrical valve actually works, but my guess is that it's a solenoid that works a plunger, and the plunger pushes on the actual hydraulic valve to open it.rickydicky2 wrote:Yep tried that and it worked !

My guess as to why the roof was slow is friction on the hinges of the moving arms, a spray lubricant sounds like a good idea. I used an old fashioned oilcan when I heard some creaking/groaning recently, and the noise has stopped.

Like I say, I applied some current to the valve and it just clicked. The, what appears to be a plunger with two rubber seals, didn't move in or out. Either way, it now works. I like to know how things work. I've ruined many bits by taking them apart, with springs ,washers etc flying everywhere !

I assume you applied 12V to the electrical valve. Just guessing, but it's possible that the Roof ECU generates a higher voltage drive to the valve (e.g. a voltage amplifier). Perhaps you unstuck it with your voltage, without applying enough to make a visible effect?
EDIT: Another possibility is that the part you removed is simply a powerful solenoid which creates a strong magnetic field. The actual valve is within the body of the hydraulic unit, and the field attracts the moving part, causing it to open.
