Car cutting out when slowing down

Post by kjt98 »

Hi,

I have a manual, 54 plate, 1149 cc, 206. I have two problems that keep occurring. I have had my car MOT'd, serviced and diagnostic tested but everything comes back as being perfectly ok (obviously everything is not ok).

1) Sometimes the engine will not tick over, I try to start it and it will start as it should normally but will cut out straight away. So it's like the engine is on for all of maybe half a second before it dies, and then will not start for a while after.

2) Whilst I am driving, (when I am slowing down) I will brake and dip the clutch and all of a sudden the engine will cut out. This does not happen every single time but it does happen regularly and as you can imagine it is scary and VERY frustrating. The engine will come back on once I have turned the key in the ignition but it can happen several times in a short trip.

Does any body have any solutions to my problems, I would like to try the cheapest option first. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Kieran.

Kieran. What diagnostics were used and did you look at live data? Any dashboard warning lights?
Cheers Col.

Tickover speed?

Has it been doing it long? Could be a bad tank of fuel.....

Could be a blocked injector.

Bit old school, and probably not relevant (one for you younguns that work on these new fangled jobs). Theres not anything like a ballast resistor on these is there?

No. They are COP (coil on plug)

Check the earth lead on the gearbox to body strap arrangement, this causes all manner of electrical problems on this car. It is often loose, corroded or the lead is burnt from excessive use of the starter.
