Passed MOT

Post by Spitfire6 »

Hi,
After replace the snapped handbrake cable, loose exhaust and adding water to the washer bottle the car passed its MOT.

The car had a knocking noise over bad roads and suspected a knackered bush. Post MOT showed the front dampers were easy to compress and stiff as **** to extend. Advised this could be the knocking issue. Upon removing dampers; springs were shown to be worn. Requested to change both as they looked very old and wanted to give the car a new life.

Pick car up and drive home. On motorway the steering wheel vibrates but disappears when accelerating, only to reappear when foot of gas.

I take car to a local garage for a tracking check and front wheel balance. Garage cannot do the work as the dampers are not located properly in the lower clamp; The raised surface on the damper was not between the pinch bolt and this meant the dampers were setting about 8mm too high.
Back to original garage and they fitted correctly..

Once I get correct wheel studs fitted (a different post), I will get the wheels balanced and tracking checked/set. Hopefully vibration will go.

Cheers,
Iain.

Hi,
Just had the fronts balanced and one tyre replaced as there was a bulge on the sidewall.
I saw inside the dismounted tyre and had about 250mL of white fluid and about 500 grams of lumps of rubber looking compound.
No wonder the wheel vibrated with approximately 1 Kg of mobile crap in it!

Moral of the story:
Use tyre weld to get you to a tyre replacement outfit. Do not use it to "fix" a leaky tyre and don't leave it in there. Don't exceed 50MPH if you have used tyre weld.
Read and believe the instructions on the can..

Cheers,
Iain.

Did you know you can balance a wheel using "mobile crap"?

A bulge in the sidewall is an MOT failure, but anything inside the tyre would not be seen by the MOT tester, so it would not effect MOT test.
