Unused connectors near headlights

Post by danielz000 »

Hi guys,

I noticed I have a headlight out today (no idea if this is related to the "auto lighting fault" i got a few weeks ago but when I checked the bulbs the other day they were all working) when I went to swap a new bulb in I noticed that on the passenger side there's two free connectors and on the drivers side there's 1 free connector. Is this normal?

The free connectors all seem to accept 3 pins into them and the 1 on the drivers side and 1 of the 2 on the passenger side seem to connected directly to the rubber back cover of the head light.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,

Dan

Additionally:

I've just noticed the bulb I've pulled out from the head light slot appears to be a H1 bulb but I think the head light should be a H7?!

There's also what appears to be some connectors in the look which looks a bit suspect...

Has it had aftermarket light fitted?

Hi mate.

Looking at it, it would appear so :/

I don't know if this is due to damage or preference but it's a cheap aftermarket part.

Any idea how much a pair would cost off a breaker and weather a 206 set would fit?

Also, the 3 pin connector appears to be earth, dipped and high beam. Any idea where or what controls the electronic height on the dipped beams? Is there another connector?

Some 206's came with H4 & H7 connectors to suit two different light units fitted as it was cheaper to manufacture that way.

CC should use the pug lug that fits into socket on back of dual lamp unit. H4 connect directly to single lamp with dip and main on lower value models.

Cheers Gaz.

This is definitely an after market part :(

The spares on ebay are pretty reasonable. Is the height/pitch adjustment motor internal to the unit or would I have to buy that separately?

Also, I've not noticed a fog light is out and it's not a blown bulb. Is this a standard front fog light? Does anyone know what the plug is for at the top of it as the connectors are directly on the bulb it seems... I had the tyre on still and couldn't make out if it's just the power supply to the fitting.

Motors are usually separate and easy to break! There is a small ball on the end of the adjusting rod that rarely wants to come loose. (Guess who has the t-shirt!)

Fog lights on CC are same as GTI ones .. the standard ones don't fit!

Cheers Gazza. Will standard 206 headlights fit the CC?

I'm hoping the headlights were swapped as preference rather than front end damage as having looked at them more closely i believe they're angel headlights or what ever they're called. There's rings around the headlights which (just about) light up, I never even noticed :/

Reckon I'll have to get myself a soldering kit and make good of the crappy re-wiring that's occured. Hopefully that fog light and the associated wiring is all standard still, although I have my doubts given the fog light doesn't seem to be working despite changing the bulb.

Slightly off topic, would I get more/better lighting from a h4 bulb than a h1 bulb?

Base 206 lights I think are different. The 'CC has basically got the GTI front end and parts swap between the 2.
You can't swap an H4 bulb with an H1 or any other halogen as the mounting flange is different, and also focal lengths etc:
You would have to swap out the entire headlight unit.
The H4 is twin filament whereas H1 & H7 are single.
Go for higher wattage or HID conversion if you want more light.

Thanks Capncol.

I was aware I wouldn't be able to do a straight swap with any of the bulbs but was thinking that if H4 produces more light it's worth me replacing the headlights back to originals.

I'll keep my eyes open for a set from a CC or a GTI.

I don't think it's worth me doing a HID conversion or anything so fancy, I'd be happy with the standard amount of light the headlights should produce, I'm just not happy using aftermarket parts that hold bulbs that aren't as bright as the originals.

H1 or H7 should be better than H4 ... they are single filament bulbs as opposed to the H4 double-filament so does dip and main but only one at a time. The dual H7 units on the CC and GTI have the advantage on main, both bulbs are lit.

The H4 units are "frosty" lens

and the H7s clear, or crystal units.

Picture quality isn't great sorry.

That's great Gazza. Thanks for the pictures. So I'm better off looking for clear glass h7 headlights. Will the two headlights in your pictures have the same connectors?

The early ones (Frosted) have different bulbs, connections to the light and BSI configuration.

Just fit a set of cleat lights
