I am just looking for some advice. I have a 01 plate Peugeot CC 2.0 litre engine. I have only just bought this car within the last couple of months. I love the car to bits, nice and smooth to drive. Sorted through a few problems, bulbs etc. I noticed that there was a slight howl type noise in 1st and 2nd gear when engine breaking. This would occur when slowing down while the car was in 1st or 2nd gear. The noise would happen from about 20mph down to about 15mph then completely vanish. There was no noise when accelerating or in any other gear just 1st and 2nd when slowing down. You could eliminate the noise by pressing the clutch so I definately knew it was coming from the gearbox. The noise was not a horrific whine or mechanical sounding, it almost sounded like a faint police siren in the background through that 5 mile deceleration gap. Anyway, I am a fuss pot so I went ahead and had the gearbox replaced for a recon unit. The new gearbox I have had installed makes almost the same noise but quieter.... and instead of in 1st and 2nd gear it happens in 2nd and 3rd.. again when decelerating in gear from about 20mph down to 15mph then completely goes. It is a little howl sound like an electric motor does.. like a golf buggy but very quiet. The car drives perfect, no noise when accelerating or cruising, nice smooth gear changes, no notchiness or anything. Has had clutch replaced too and new forks etc. The work was done at my local garage which I have a good relationship with and I definately know the box was actually changed for a new recon one. I spoke to the garage and they said it is possible that this noise is normal for this type of gearbox 5 speed manual for a 2.0 litre CC. I spoke to the mechanic who fitted the box and he said some Peugeots can have this sound on the box. Anyway, the garage has contacted the company they get thier gearboxes from and an engineer is actually coming through to the garage this week. Its funny how both boxes make near enough the same sound. The noise probably wouldnt bother most people but as I said I am a fuss pot and always listening out for sounds

Anyways if there are any experts out there who can give me any advice it would be greatly appreciated because I cant help but feel I may have just had the gearbox replaced unnecessarily
. Just to summarise... new recon box fitted, clutch etc... 2nd and 3rd gear decelerating in gear from 20mph down to about 15mps approx a slight howl type, faint police siren noise as the gearbox is slowing the car down. No other noise, smooth gear changes, great acceleration. Thanks guys

Re: Gearbox advice
Hi Bertie
I have taken the car back to the garage to be re done. The grarbox, clutch, clutch forks, driveshaft seals and gear oil came to a total of 887. That was everything. The box was about 300. The clutch about 120. The forks and shaft seals about 80 and the oil was about 30. The rest was labour and VAT. Hope this helps.
