rear axle change

Post by Jofestus »

Hi everybody, I am trying to change the rear axle on my wife's 206cc 2.0 2002 model. I have stripped the shocks off but cannot get the trailing arms off (which is why I have had to go for a complete axle). the problem I have now is that I cant seem to get enough clearance to get the axle out there are two strengthening struts which go from the chassis side rails to a box section behind the rear bumper. the axle beam is fouling on this box section, do I need to remove the strengthening struts in order to get the beam out? I'm not sure if this will give enough room to get it out, am I doing this all wrong? Any help or advice would be welcomed, thanks in advance, Joe :(

Drop the bars and it will come out easily. From memory............
4 bolts for the axle
Shock absorbers
Handbrake cable
Calipers/ brake pipes
ABS sensors
Cheers Col.

Thanks for the reply Col, I was guessing that would be the answer, problem is I can't seem to get the bolts that hold the struts onto the box section out. I've sheared the heads off 3 t45 torx bits trying to get them undone, have soaked them in WD40 overnight, sprayed 'em again and left them overnight again but the buggers wont budge. Think I'm gonna have to try and drill them out and try again, so frustrated.

Get penetrating fluid ... Normal WD40 isn't up to the job.

Plus gas and a good whack with a hammer on the heads before undoing.
Are you using good quality Torx sockets?
Cheers Col.

Bought a new set of torx bits "blue spot" brand from machine mart, they carry a lifetime guarantee apparently so I thought they would be a good make.

For anyone reading this after searching.....Ive swapped my rear axle today and had to deal with these bolts.

The tool you need to remove them is a t50 not t45, halfords do one for 6 quid and its more than upto the job.

Also gave each bolt a minute blast with my electric heat gun, best thing for rusty bolts is heat.
