CATALYTIC CONVERTER ERROR

Post by CocoBrisbane »

Hello All

Long time reader, first time poster. I have read the posts regarding catalytic converter error but I am still confused. Today my car seized so after a 2hr wait for RACQ- they connected the diagnostic reader and the error reads 'crank/cam sensor and range/performance but the actual red screen on my car said 'catalytic converter fault' - I am SO over this.

This happened when I put the car in reverse and then went to move forward- steam shot out of the bonnet for a split second and then I could smell something that I can only describe as stinky plaque- VERY concerning :hmm: It also pumped the water out. I always keep an eye on water and oils etc etc

Has anyone else experienced similar and what would I be up for ballpark estimates? I am thinking that with it being an electrical fault- it would be major. But then also the smell was really worrying.

I have had aircon replaced, timing belt, power steering and something else down also that eludes me at this exact moment..

Hi Coco, Its all gone quiet, hasn't it! I've had something like this in the past, and was hoping that you would have some informed response, because I've never got to the root of the problem myself. In my case I noticed this happened after heavy rain and deduced that somehow it was upsetting the ignition system, causing the cat to make smelly fumes. Took it to the garage and they said nothing wrong! I now regularly chuck WD40 over the lump - seems okay.

Thanks Luditus.. Hmm yours sounds like a fix that I would love! Unfortunately the computer has actually shut down my engine and it won't start- even after a week of just sitting there. I have ordered a replacement part from the UK and am (im)patiently awaiting the arrival so that I can book it in. Worst time to have a breakdown over the xmas holidays and likely more $$$ down the gurgler- I always choose moneypit cars.. :(

That sounds more mechanical than electrical. There is no electrical component that would cause it to seize.
Is the engine now turning over now? Did you find where the *steam* came from? Coolant level OK?
Cheers Col.

Thank you Capncol- and you were right- it was mechanical.

*drum roll* The spark plugs were worn and the ignition coil pack was not firing properly (internal short). So the spark plugs were removed and replaced and a new coil pack was fitted to the vehicle at a total cost of $651.

Only now, it has been discovered that there is a knock from the right hand front engine mount- which hopefully my Dad can fix, but also a more pressing problem- the exhaust requires attention!!

For a car whose log book has been full of a great service history, I cannot believe that everything that can go wrong- DOES!!! This car has been ridiculous!

On a brighter note- I am happy that this spark problem has not cost thousands- unlike my Nissan300zx- yet another moneypit- but was the love of my life- as all moneypits can be haha.
