Rear Axle Clank.

Post by Karrot »

Odd one this, but throwing it out there to see if anyone has encountered it.

I have a clank from the rear end. When going over rough surfaces it sounds like 2 scaffolding bars clanking off each other.

I originally though exhaust or heat shields but, having faffed on with these for a few weeks, I quite by change replicated the noise one day by simply slapping the rear axle cross member. I can also replicate it by slapping either of the rear shock absorbers. It sounds like its coming from within the axle cross member, but Google research would seem to show that there's nothing in the actual tube. This is all with the vehicle on its wheels, not jacked up.

Does anyone have any further ideas, other than a full axle replacement?

I cant feel any play in the trailing arm bearings, but I havent pulled the torsion bars out to check this (wouldnt want to to be honest)

Cheers

Just to close this one off.

the Clank was from the off side trailing arm bearings being shot. So shot in fact that the coaxial torsion bar was damaged.

New Axle fitted, Clonk removed, happy.
