newbie new 206cc & issues ???

Post by Above The Clouds »

Hi all
firstly what a great site !!!
Just bought 206cc 2005 1.6 couple of weeks ago was for the wife but I am loving it myself... we will share her....
any hows
Would like to ask what your thoughts are on the following
1, some warring noise coming from the engine only at idle though ?
2, Handbrake lifts quite high to operate fully ?
3, Clutch seems high up before engaging ?
Other than that drives lovely..
I did take it her to my local garage for a service as it was overdue last service 22,000 now 39,000
Owner said the noise was from the alternator and was normal on these engines ??
Also handbrake works fine don't worry.....
never mentioned clutch......
Recommended new cam belt thought strange only done 39,000 but nearly 10 years old I suppose.
Charged £260 for service and new rear pads.....
quoted £220 for new cam belt ?? would you recommend new water pump as well ??
Any help would be greatly appreciated ...... :love-thx:

Get the alternator noise sorted along with the cambelt (should also change tensioners & w/pump) Belt is nearly due on age, so get it done.

Handbrake is self adjusting. So long as it meets MOT stds, it will be OK.(Unless adjuster has failed)

Clutch is hydraulic so self adjusting on your year of car. If it's not causing problems, don't fret too much.
Cheers Col.

Thanks Col for the reply.
Garage said noise from alternator was a normal thing with 206 engines ? never mentioned it could be sorted ? does it mean new one ?
Could I get away with just a new belt as its only done 39,000 or would I also need water pump and tensioners ?
Cheers.
o seen cam belt kit on flea bay genuine Peugeot part for £107 is that a good price ?

The water pump and tensioners are about half way through their service life so you could risk just replacing the belt if you are doing the job yourself and know what you are doing. You are in a similar position to me with our car which will be 10 years old next April. If you are paying a garage to do the work why not get two quotes and decide whether to go the whole hog or not. If I was getting a garage to do the work I think I'd have the lot done, but we have a good independent Peugeot specialist in Oadby and I'd heed what they recommend. I'd hate to save £50 only to have to pay out another £300 should the water pump fail a year or two later.

I have seen several cambelt failures that were not due to the belt itself. I have seen-

waterpump frozen (due to in sufficient antifreeze) or seized that has stripped the teeth off a belt.

Tensioner/guide pullys where the bearing has gone and caused the tensioner to run *cocked*

Tensioner/guide pully broken up or seized

Auxillary belt broken/failed and gone up inside cambelt cover.**

Stones in the cambelt cover that has caused holes in the belt.

Camshaft seizure causing belt to break (Peugeot / Citroen 2.2HDI)

** This is why I said get alternator noise sorted

Your'e talking up to £2000 at a garage to rectify the damage of a broken cambelt.
Cheers Col.

I'm on the VW Audi forum too. This post by zollaf is relevant:

"well i get called out today by the owner of some holiday cottages, i do work for people that break down there. one of his customers arrived in an a4 , temp gauge right up and making some funny noises. turns out he had the timing belt replaced not long ago, but the idiot that did it failed to replace th genuine water pump. well, the impellor is now in pieces in his engine and his holiday isn't going to planned. luckily i am away next week so having a quiet week this week so could fit him in. the next jackass that thinks its a good idea to not replace a water pump can go do rude things to themselves, had enough of amateurs."

Think about it this way .. you take the car to the garage and have the cambelt fitted .. and it costs say £250. A week or so later the alternator fails and you go back ... included in the cost will be the removal of some of the same parts .. so you're paying twice. Worse still the alternator seizes, the auxiliary belt shreds and you lose not only the charging but also your power steering! The aux belt can and has also got tangled in other moving parts ... the drive-shaft is close by ... and you are on the motorway and doing the limit ... or your wife is!

Up to you but I know what I'd do .. for piece of mind.

If it's in for a cambelt and the alternator is already whining, why not get it replaced at the same time as the car is already partly stripped and easier to get to.

And when fitting a new cambelt, make sure they replace the tensioner, idler AND the water pump. Get a new aux belt and probably the tensioner for that too. They should also now keep the old parts to show you (you might want to remind them!), then they can go in the bin

Firstly make sure it is the alternator and not a tensioner or other component. I wouldn't mention you think it's the alt to the new garage. Just say "please diagnose this noise!" and see what they come up with
Cheers Col.

Hi guys, another newbie here too lol

Must agree I have found some useful advice on this site so thanks to all.

I bought a 206cc 203 reg and basically was stitched up :o

Iv had the car two weeks and so far iv had new exhaust system including cat, new break pads and discs all round, two new tyres and it ain't stopped there

Could any of you nice guys/gals tell me what could poss be wrong now?

The car doesn't like starting in the cold weather, turn key first time car doesn't start, second time it starts but for the first say 5 mins of running it's missing, as in you put ur foot down to go it's very slow to react, once she's warm then she runs fine, I was worried it was going to be something wrong with the fuel injection system?

Answer please lol
