Turns over but won't start!! ** FIXED **

Post by stuart638 »

Good Afternoon,

I'm in need of your help please!!

My wifes 2003 1.6 16V 206CC has a non-starting problem that I cant get to the bottom of. The car had been running fine, until she got in it one day to go to work and it would not fire up.... turned over fine, but wouldn't start.

I'm not a mechanic, but I have a reasonable mechanical understanding, but this has me stumped!

So, here's what I've done so far.......

1. I have carried out the BSI reset proceedure following Capncol's instructions to the letter. (I've probably done this a dozen times now!)

2. I have made sure the battery is in good condition. It's been fully charged and tested - all good.

3. I decided to buy a Lexia 3 diagbox with Peugeot Planet 2000. I've run the diagnostic several times and it appears to talk to all of the ECU's with no faults coming up. (This surprised me a bit to be honest!).

4. I've done a visual check on the wiring loom, particularly under the air filter as I'd read that there was a section prone to corroding wires under there. All look fine, but I haven't checked each wire for resistance yet.

5. I've checked all fuses with a meter and all are fine.

6. I reset the keys using PP2000 and they work fine.

7. I removed the coil pack & plugs and using the actuator test on PP2000, I checked for a spark....... NO SPARK!! I also checked for a spark, buy turning the engine over on the key. Still no spark.I checked the coil pack plug and there is no voltage at he plug on any of the four wires. (I know one is an earth)

8. Whilst the plugs were out, I did a compression test. Cylinder 1 (gearbox end) was a little low compared to the others, but a little bit of oil down the plug hole and a retest saw it come up, so probably needs a set of rings at some stage.

9. Fuel pressure seems OK. After cranking I checked the little bleed valve on the fuel rail and it squirted all over me!! I also removed the rear seat and I can hear the fuel pump operating.

10. Again using the actuator test on PP2000, I checked the injectors one by one. I can hear all clicking during the test, BUT there is no smell of fuel with the plugs removed, which I was expecting there would be?

11. I removed the crank sensor to check for damage / debris, but it was clean and undamaged.

I guess I'm now at a point where I need to start thinking about replacing components, but I'd like your opinions first please, or anything you think I've missed?

Is it possible that the ECU or BSI has gone faulty, even though the diagnostic test is fine?

Fingers crossed!!!

Thanks.... Stuart.

Hi Tom,

No, problem still there, it's so frustrating

What I don't understand is after checking it with the Peugeot Planet, it doesn't show ANY faults. I'm thinking that I might try replacing the whole BSI/ECU set and see if that cures it. My only theory is that perhaps something has been corrupted that isn't visible to Peugeot Planet?

oh really! I havent got pp2000, i have a snap-on ethos and its not bringing any fault codes up on mine either.. im thinking the bsi is the fault as if it was an engine management problem there would be atleast something to go by stored in there to read.. is yours saying "economy mode active" on the display?

cheers
tom

Yes 'economy mode active' is also on mine. From what I understand, as soon as we can get them started, that message will go.

Ah yes ive just read that aswell.. Ive also done everything you have done so far, so realistically me and you are on the exact same stage at the moment. the car had a new battery a month or so back apparently and has been fine since but when she went to use the car last weekend this started to happen.. reckon it could be worth sending the bsi off for testing? think BBA Reman does it so think ill ring them for a quote

It would certainly be interesting to know if BBA have come across this before? Not sure if it would be the BSI, the ECU, or both that they would need.

Failing that, I might just buy a complete secondhand set from ebay.

Ah, OK. If you speak to them, I'd be interested to know how much they would charge.

they reckon they are very common and by the symptoms i decribed to them they reckon it is a memory corruption fault in the bsi. she said they can sort it by blanking the memory and then we'd need to code the bsi back to the car with pp2000.. they charge £125+vat + postage (which is £160 basically)

how much did you pay for your pp2000 as i need one

cheers
