I'd try the thermostat first - cheaper and easier. Only difference with being on the move is airflow - I wouldn't have thought this would be enough to overcome a knackered pump. Could even be an airlock I suppose.

I would suggest flushing the coolant system with an additive , drain and back flush radiator, remove header tank and clean out with bottle brush refill with coolant/water mixture, what's the coolant like, is it brown in colour and smelly if so definite flush required, what size engine is it and do you have a coolant temp and oil temp on the dash if so is the oil temp high, this would indicate an oil flush and change required? I agree that unlikely a water pump

I agree with both Enright and Ricky.
With a 13 year old car, unless the timing belt was changed as it should have been 3 years ago, complete with a brand new water pump, cooling system flush and fresh coolant then Ricky's recommendation is sound. However if the timing belt renewal has been carried out properly as it should have been, then I'd suspect the thermostat.
So what does the service history tell you?

Re: I think water pump......agree/disagree
Thanks guys
It was indeed the water pump at £15 a very quick fix but two days later the brakes failed.
The offside rear cylinder failed, however checking the whole system revealed the nearside adjuster was stiff and not adjusting, front pads down to 3mm, discs are well worn and two tyres either illegal or so close to make no difference.
So its cylinder, shoes and adjuster, two tyres and then back to the front pads and discs in that order.

Hope you didn't put the old timing belt ... or you have a ticking time-bomb on you hands ...
You shoukd have changed tbat and tensioner and idler while it was all off.
Even if it was changed recently it is not a good dea to put the timing belt back.
