Question about buying 206cc

Hey guys,

First I'll introduce myself, Paul 24 yrs and from the Netherlands.
Since dutch boards arent as active as I hoped, I'm looking for answers abroad.

Im on the verge of buying a 206cc, but at this moment they are hard to find with the right features(acc airbags and abs) and year/mileage (km's for me).

The purchase guide is very helpfull, but I do have an additional question which isn't answered there.

I seem to recal reading somewhere that you shouldnt buy 206cc from before 2003 due to electrical problems or something. I'm looking for confirmation of this,

Hi Paul and welcome.
Not aware of any more problems on the pre 2003, but it's worth noting that there were a lot of changes in 2002 (Pre & post mux / plex) Basically after 2002 they had Peugeots can-bus system.

We've got a 2001 model and it's no problem. We've also got a 2002 diesel hatch and apart from an issue with the glow-plug circuit it's also been relatively electric-problem free. Like all cars, sensors fail and we've had a couple of new temp sensors ..

There are some common issues like the CC battery is taller than the hatchback and if wrong, can disconnect itself while driving ... which is not useful! And you don't just disconnect and reconnect it ... there is a process to follow.

The coil-packs are in one unit and some manufacturer versions can play up with plugs.

Roofs micro-switches can play up, but probably no more that other cars. But the CC is older technology now so having a multimeter handy is useful when it does. More often that not it just gets out of sync as the driver stops the open/close process part way through.


Perhaps what they are referring to is the switch to multiplex but that was in 2002. This is a more complex system like canbus and parts can be more expensive. Items like the column switches come as a single unit rather than separate arms, etc ... and there are several versions depending upon the equipment that is fitted. Changing items cam mean resetting or updating the BSI (the car's brain!)


If you are thinking of maintaining it yourself, cambelts aren't hard, but the room to work is restricted. You can get special tools to lock the crank and cams, but suitable sized bolts work as well.

The advantage of a post 2001 petrol engine is that diagnosis software is easier to obtain as they are EOBD compatible. Prior to that some systems don't read correctly and you need PP2000 and Lexia-3 cables. But this works on the newer cars and it can be useful ... especially with the BSI!

Thanx for the relpys gents! Very usefull. Luckaly i found a 03 model with 118k(73miles) kilometres. Going to have a look at it on saturday. Cost is 3450 euro(2850pounds) which is a set price (no mingleing).
the expensive belt (don't know how to call it) will be changed on purchase, and all fluids will be topped off.


Might I buy it i'll sure post some pictures of it :thumbs:

Cam belt ... make sure they also change the water pump as this is driven by the same belt and could start leaking with the extra pressure on it from the new tensioners, etc. Make sure they keep the old one to show you to prove it's been swapped out!

The timing belt itself is not expensive - about £15. The expense is in the labour charge (the mechanic's time and expertise).

To do the job properly the tensioner and idler pulleys should be renewed too, along with a brand new water pump and refill with fresh anti-freeze mixture. To just re-use and top up 11 year old coolant would be a mistake in my opinion.

Unless a car is very low mileage then it is false economy to change just the belt. When the pulleys fail, or the water pump fails, then all the work has to be done again - doubling the cost and inconvenience.

As a matter of interest how many owners has the car had? (A good indicator of whether or not it has been problematic in the past). Is it a 1.6 or a 2.0 engine?

In the UK I would expect to pay a maximum of £2000 for a 206cc of that vintage and mileage.

10/11 years old and 73000 miles is within the recommended change by Peugeot .. not that I would leave any of my cars that long!

In holland they cost significant more than in the uk as i read ur post. similar cars cost like 4k++ on holland.
Im buying it of a dealer with good rep on the web, car has had 4 owners before this garage, allthough some might be resellers. The salesman told me he had a repair history of the car.

When i buy it i want to give it another service just to freshenup the oil and liquids, but ill do that at my local shop which i trust entirely.
