Needle sounds stuck. Give the top of the dash a wallop

Yep, it looks like it's come adrift if it's hanging straight down.
Cheers Col.

Re: rev counter sitting past full revs
Does it wobble at all when driving, like from the vibration of the car??
My guess would be that its a dead gauge, either from the needle coming loose or the gauge mechanism failing.

Re: rev counter sitting past full revs
Hmm, so that's what the last good wallop did to the needle - the next one will probably make it fall off completely!
If you're lucky and the needle has just come loose on it's shaft, it could be an easy fix:
To get the cluster out you just slide something like a wall-paper scraper between the lower front edge of pod and the facia, then lever it upwards and it pops off.
After that the cluster is only held in by one torx screw top centre, and a couple of multi-plugs at the back which simply unclip.
I can't remember for sure, but the perspex front cover should be secured to the body of the instrument cluster by a few individual spring clips which can be gently prised off one by one.
Then you have access to the dial faces.
You can gently flick the needle rounnd to see if there's any resistance (or if it's completely stuck).
Personally, I would assume that the car ticks over at about 1000rpm, although I'm sure someone with a 2.0 will confirm this, connect up the dials and start the car, then use a tiny bit of super-glue and as gently as you can, re-locate the needle in the right postion. Don't try to do it with the ignition turned off and just pointing it at zero, because there's usually a mechanical stop that the needle rests against under spring tension - so zero is unreliable. That's why you need a known rpm number to aim at.
If you're not so lucky, then you may have to buy another set of dials. Just watch out though, because if you get a set that has a higher mileage on them than your current ones, you'll have to get the whole lot (ECU, BSI and dials) re-programmed by a specialist to get the mileage corrected. This can be very expensive.

Awesome!
For info the 2.0 idles at about 800rpm when warm, 11-1200 when cold.
