Cracked Exhaust (warning!)

Post by gazza82 »

MOT time yesterday, and I noticed "Kermit" was blowing a bit underneath as it sat idling for the emissions test ... which it failed.

Once up on the lift we could see why. The exhaust has been pushed up at the back end of the main silencer and the joint was cracked top and bottom. Not much, but enough to be noisy and fail the first emissions test. Gungum liberally applied .. mot sorted.

As it's less than a year old, I am not about to replace it, but if it gives trouble I'll take it off and get it welded. On the 2 litre the front section is one piece from the manifold to the joint just before the rear axle ... and that long section also includes the cat .. so they are not cheap!

We think it's a speed hump issue. Where my daughter lives there are several and the CC sits so low, it has bottomed-out at some point. It was enough to make the rubber hanger just behind the silencer come off one of the fixing pins.

Luckily I have a good garage and he pushed it back on and helped apply the exhaust paste ... I think I may have a look for some Powerflex hangers as they are far less liable to come off ... they are really tight to fit .. I've got them on the Alfa now so I know just how hard the re to get on!! (hint to anyone considering them: use lots of copper grease!!)

My exhaust center came away from the back box after going over a speed bump lol it was trailing along the floor, Have just fitted a new center exhaust with 3 new rubber fittings and yes they are a pain to fit, I had to hacksaw off the front clip cause the bolt was just spinning. Wouldn't have minded but the exhaust was supposed to be new.....it had rusted so much that it just came off lol. It sounds great now its fitted :) cost me £49 for the center exhaust rubbers and 2 clips :) and I didn't use copper grease and yes it is difficult to fit them. The supposed new exhaust was fitted after the other supposed new one fell off on the slip road coming off the M6 motorway and catching the rear tyre ripping the full exhaust off lol they had not changed the rubber fittings and they snapped, So make sure that if you get an exhaust fitted they change these too regardless of ware and tare.

Better still fit Powerflex poly exhaust hangers ... less likely to break but three times as hard to fit. They don't give much so I used copper grease to help them over the metal hangers when I did my Alfa. Will upgrade the 206 next time but the rubber hangers were ok ... suprising given the original exhaust was more rust than metal ;-)

Hi . Angus here with 2001 2.0 petrol SE . I have a crack in the pipe just after the cat before it enters the middle box . I was going to put a sleeve over it . Theres no support in the gearbox type tunnel area so it can sag . I wondered if anyone knew the pipe size as a sleeve repair kit would allow extra support . Would measure my own but in my truck till Wednesda so cant access it .seems a shame to buy a whole cat when the problem is the pipe that comes out . Reckon its 2" or 2.5" does anyone know . Ta . Angus . :)
