Tyre: 87W or can I use 83Y ?

Post by SAnt »

Hi all,

I recently purchased a 2002 206cc 2.0l ( Winter is certainly the time to purchase one ;) ) and need to replace the tyres. They are currently 205/45 R16 87W. I've seen good reviews on the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 but they seem to be 83Y. Is this a problem? Or should I only use 87W on this car?

Thanks in advance!

Speed rating W is up to 270 kph (168 mph)

Y rating is up to 300 kph (186 mph)

Load rating 87 is 545 kg per tyre

Load rating 83 is 487 kg per tyre

With a top speed of 204kph and a max gross weight of 1562 kg both exceed the minimum requirements for your car.

Check yourself on http://www.tyresave.co.uk/tyrspeed.html

Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 205/45W16 Load index 83 would be what I'd be looking at but the 83Y's that you are considering should be fine as they have an even higher speed rating. How much are they?

Hi GrandadMonkey,

Thanks for the warm welcome and concise answer :) I've seen them for £76 each delivered.

Out of interest, why would you pick the GSD3 83W over the Asymmetric 2 83Y? I've gone with the latter because of the wet rating.

Only because of local availability.

If the Asymmetric 2's are rated better for your needs, and you can get them at that superb price then I agree with your decision. The reports on them are excellent.

Gone for them as where I am has an average 20 days/month @ 200mm, over double UK ave  , so these look ideal. But when the sun does come out, it's a great place to be :)

Just hoping the local garage wont charge me too much to fit them.

A little update. Ordered them for just under £76 each delivered from tyreleader (Not allowed to post links, apparently) who appear to be a German company and I think they were posted from Belgium.

They sent them out in pairs, but :censored: DPD sent 1 pair on a scenic route! Can't fault tyreleader as I ordered late on Thursday, despatched on Friday (Tracking details given in email) and were due for delivery the following Monday. Although due to DPD, 1 set were delivered Monday and the 2nd set Wednesday because nobody was in on the Tuesday :(

Local garage put them on for a very reasonable £10 each. Went for a little trip today in the rain and they felt really comfortable
