Roof wont do anything

Post by RDooley »

Hello there chaps and chappess', hope all is well.
My names Ryan and i work for Devon motor homes, and my boss has recently bought a lovely little low mileage 206cc with a roof fault off a customer hoping that we would be able to sort it.
So heres what ive done so far, i have checked all micro switchs for operation and found two that arent playing the game, so i have bypassed these for the meen time with electrical connectors just to prove a point before we commit to buying parts, and all the switchs appear to be supplying the correct signal down to the input ports in the roof ecu, however still nothing , just the irritating noise resinating from the dash whenever i touch the roof button or go above 5mph, and no "bong" when i undo the roof catches.
Leading me to believe the ecu itself is at fault.
Any thoughts and oppinions most appreciated.
Im extremely interested in the auto electrics side of things and dont like to be defeated so i will get to the bottom of this somehow or other, so if any of you guys can help me id be most appreciative. :D

Ryan, have you tested the pump?, an easy way to check it is take the cover off one the relays that sits with the pump inside the padded sleeve, give the relay contact a quick press and if the pump is operable you will hear and see it move, don't worry this wont damage anything, you are only making contact for a millisecond, I have done it many times with no adverse effect at all, do it with ignition OFF, the relays have a permanent live feed.

Also, with microswitches bear in mind that some have continuity when closed, and vice versa, As far as I am aware no one on here has ever mentioned this detail, the two switches on the roof clasps on the windscreen pillar are both "live" when open (clasps undone), whereas most others with the exception of 1 in the bootlid are "live" when depressed.
I would not rule out the ECU either though, I worked on a blue one recently which had all the microswitches removed and tested, still nothing, then changed the ECU, hey presto it sprung into life!.

I would say the fault probably is in a microswitch though, check the clasp is doing its job properly first, use a torch and shine it into the switch as you open and close the clasp, there is just enough room to see the silver arm on the switch opening and closing.

If you do require any parts I have a pile of tested items in the garage, inc every switch on the car, ecu's etc.

Which switches have you bypassed, as most need to be *tripped* in sequence at the right time or else the ecu won't play ball?
Cheers Col.
