Gear Box

Post by Cozmo »

Hi All,

I'm having issues finding a gear box for my 2001 1.6 Petrol manual 206 cc. I'm completely clueless when it comes to cars...but should a normal 206 gearbox work fine for a 206cc car?

And would it matter if the gearbox I find was for a 1.1, 1.4 etc?

I would really appreciate some help as I really need my car back.

Regards
Cozmo

1.6 petrol will be same whether it's a hatchback or CC ...

Smaller (and larger) engine gearboxes may be different so try and stick with same engine and you should be fine. I don't think it help that Peugeot designate their gearboxes the same (MA5 ie Manual 5-speed).

Some 2001 Citroen's may also work ... they share the running gear on many models ... (look at a newish C1 and a 107 next to each other and the only difference is the grill and badge!).

If you are stuck somewhere like 247spares should be able to help as they do the hard work finding the gearbox from the breakers and email/txt you when they find one.

You also need to watch the year as later cars had hydraulic clutch. Also try peugeot 306, 106, Citroen xantia of the same engine size/year. Other engine sizes with the TU suffix will fit but final drive ratio will be different. Check the code number on the gearbox to be certain of correct one it should be 2 numbers 2 letter then 2 numbers something like 20cp98

Thanks for your help.

Only problem is finding one now...nobody seems to have one for under £200 which unfortunately is my budget.

Anyone know where I may find one?

It won't go into 1st gear. The gear stick will move into first but you can bring the clutch all the way up and it doesn't stall and won't move forward...and it won't physically let you put it into 2nd gear. Putting it in reverse (when it first started happening) seems to sort it to to begin with but now doesn't.

I'm in Essex Enright..but willing to travel some distance to get one.

Sounds like a selector problem. Possibly a cheap repair. I can repair it but it would involve you taking it out and sending it to me on a pallet (I can arrange that too. I have a TNT account)

It really depends on what the damage is as to cost, and I wouldn't know that until it's stripped If it's the pins holding the selector, it's around £60 labour to strip and reassemble box and a few pence for the part. It could be a lot more involved, like a broken selector fork and would cost accordingly. this thread shows what's involved. Courier is around £60 each way dependent on overall size and weight. It would need to be drained dry of all oil too (no leakage). It doesn't need to be clean externally , so long as the outer packaging is clean. You can deliver it in person if you prefer. I will PM you my number.
