Suspension Spring Snapped

Post by Milton »

Hi, my sisters Peugeot 206 (2003) 1.4 left side suspension spring has snapped.

is it an easy job to replace the spring and would i need any special tools apart from the spring compressor.
would i need an impact wrench?

also around how much should she be looking to get it fitted in Peterborough.

thanks

You will need spring compressor, jack, and axle stands, and a good set of basic hand tools. Not too bad a job if you have the right tools

i have the basic tools, just need to get the spring compressors.

1. would i need a impact wrench for any of the bolts.

2. the spring has 2 purple and 1 white markings, does that mean anything.

3. also where can i get replacement nuts, the ones on the suspensions use a 16mm socket/spanner and the one at the top (in bonnet) uses a 21mm socket.

thanks

You shouldn't need an impact wrench but you should use a torque wrench when putting it back. Then large centre nut is only 45nm so a long ring spanner should get it off. You might want to invest in a Haynes manual (black cover no 4613) as this shows you what's what and has all the torque ratings.

The big nut in the centre holds the top mount to the shock, so the centre shaft needs to be held in place or it will just go around and around. So that will need some sort of deep ring-spanner and a large hex/allen key.

The colours indicate the spring rate ... you should swap with the same colours ...

You should be ok to re-use the nuts if they are tight and this is the first time they have been off. They are nylok nuts so they should really be replaced but most don't. Peugeot dealer is probably best as they could have fine threads which are harder to track down.

Personally, I'd try and get the one's with "one" hook. The two hook ones you referred to are not always easy to fit depending on the spring size.

I think I tried them when one of my springs became dislodged while doing some suspension work in our 206 hatchback and they didn't clamp on properly ... enough to get the job done, but I wasn't happy about it.

Like these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-Compresso ... 1296459851 ... but I am not endorsing these or suggesting you buy off ebay ... just for the picture!!
