Brakes :(

Post by MichiGams »

Hi This may have been covered else where but I have had my Pug206cc for just over a year, its an 04 make, theres been a number of things wrong in the last year which have all been fixed at the garage however I am sure the last time I went I got royally ripped off so am trying to find any info before I take to a new garage.

My brakes are making a weird noise but not constantly, its only after I have been in the car for a while and have been stuck in a lot of traffic or using the brake a lot. They don't feel spongy and I am not a heavy braker. They don't exactly squeak they make a weird noise, not sure if any one knows but you know when you hear the buses braking at times, it sounds like that.

Anyway any help on what the problem could be or how much I should expect to pay for new pads or discs is greatly received.

Im going to check the brake fluid although my friend said he didnt think it would be that I'm so confused and after all the problems I have had with her in the last year its becoming a nightmare to drive :(

The MOT was only done in May and had no advisory and sailed through.

Any help welcome

I'd check the pads in case they are worn. It could be the MOT didn't spot them as they don't check that hard.

If it stops ok on the brake tester, that's it. To really check you have to remove the wheel and they aren't allowed to do that! If they were low, they won't take long to wear down to the metal.

If it is that, you might need brake discs as well now.

My rear disks were well worn and the pads weren't that far behind, the car made the usual scraping/rumbling noises when stopping as they had accumulated a surface rust coating in the bits that weren't wearing. This all went through an MOT without advisories....... replaced disks and pads and its gone quiet at the back end again. FYI got Pagid rear disks and pads for £39.99 delivered from Eurocarparts, then its just the fitting :)

Try carparts4less .. same parts as ECP but usually 15-20% less ... (it's actually ECP but an internet only site!)

I've also used buypartsby.co.uk in the past and my local motor factors.

You will need a rewind tool for the back pistons ... but even with one of those it's not easy. And ours had been on so long everything was rusted up. Just popping out the spring clips and mounting bars was a mission. Spent longer getting the rear wheels off and cleaning everything up than I did changing the disks and pads.

The wheels turned out to be corrosion on the wheel and hub and I have to resort to my rubber mallet to get them to shift ... not fun when rear end is sitting on axle stands! ... Cleaned up surfaces and coated with copper slip so they come off now!

EPC sales basically make the parts the same price as CarParts4Less.
