Depends on type make and tread pattern as well. Some tyres are much noisier than others. The Dunlops on my Alfa are quite quiet as are the Hankooks on my daughters CC, but the Bridgestones on my wife's car are awful! Pity she only does low mileage as they are now nearly four years old and still have tread ... :(
