Hi Emma and welcome. Bit more detail about the car would be good.
Start by checking oil levels for engine and power steering. I would suggest you don't drive it like it is.
Cheers Col.

What are your tyre pressures? What make tyres do you have on it and how many millimetres of tread do you have left on each tyre?

What age is the car, mileage, manual or auto?, (look at the note written in red on Capncol's post).

When was it last serviced and by whom?

its a 206cc coupe 1997 engine its a 03 plate i bought this around 2 weeks ago i was told by the guy from the garage it has just had a new timing belt fitted and also a new water pump i have paperwork showing this he also put this through a full mot and on the advisory part it says nearside front brake hose has slight corrosion and also offiside pipe .
he told me the garage has replaced the front tyres also states a oil leak but say's its been repaired
the car has low profile tyres on it and its on 99000 miles and also a manual . ive checked the oil level and that is ok it's inbetween the top n bottom marks but i haven't checked the power steering fluid but it is heavy when turning corners n such . not suer on the tyre pressure either as i have no info of what should be in low profile tyres .capnol i just assumed driving 1 of these cars is like driving any car but i guess im incorrect

No, it's not that. It's just that it difficult enough to try and give some kind of help through a keyboard without seeing and hearing the problems first hand. The more info you can give, the more accurate we can be with our answers, for instance the fact it has new front tyres instantly eliminates a lot of tyre related problems that can make the steering heavy.
Also you have stated you bought it from a garage- again, puts a completely different slant on the answers we give (You have consumer rights that you don't have with a private sale)
For that reason alone, I would take it back and get them to fix the oil leak and heavy steering.

The reason I suggested checking engine oil and power steering fluid is that the most common oil leaks are from the engine, but as you have heavy steering, it is possible you have lost all the P/S fluid, thus causing the heavy steering.

Tyre pressures are shown on the sticker on the drivers "B" post (the door aparture) or in the owners hand book. You can downkload a copy from our site. Just search for "owners manual"

Water temp will come up fairly quickly, but oil should take longer. Don't worry about oil temp- it's the water temp you should concentrate on. Most cars haven't even got an oil temp gauge.

If the car has ultra low profile tyres that could affect the steering weighting. A larger footprint will mean more resistance to turning which would be noticeable at low speed.

I always run our front tyres at slightly higher pressures than the book says. Only by a couple of psi but it improves the mpg we get. In winter, if on snow, reduce the pressures back down for better grip. But then, I'm pernickety.

put 30 in front n back tyres and seems to be driving alot better than it was concidering it had 30 in front passanger side n all different readings in the rest of the tyres as for the smell of the oil i drove this to work n back tonight (70) miles and the smell of the oil is still there but the temp was on 90 again .so do you thinki need to put more pressure in the front tyres and if so what should i put in .and thanks for your input

I run mine at 32 psi which gives a comfortable enough ride. What size tyres have you got on yours and are they the same on every wheel?

If there has been an oil leak then it could still be burning off when the engine gets warm, or the leak might still be there and dripping onto the exhaust. A careful look should show this. Open the bonnet when the engine is hot and running and you should see where the fumes are coming from. It could be a breather hose broken so a lot of fumes but not much oil leaking.

The temperatures you quote seem OK.

I've got 17" alloys on my pug with 205/40x17 tyres and I usually have the pressures around 36psi

hi guys just a quick update
took the car to a garage was put up on a ramp and checked over from the guy who does the MOT'S there all was well steering was good no loss of power steering he said the noise will be from the road with the car having low profile tyres on it only little prob he found was 2 drips of oil he cleaned it up and told me to look in a few days time to see if the oil apperas again if so then i have a oil leak and this is when i will take it back to the garage i bought it from for them to put this problem right
