Screeching windows

Post by Avro748 »

Hi all,

When the windows go down they screech very loudly. There is a now a scratch on the glass, so I've been squirting oil or lubricant down the window which solves it for a week or so but then it's back to normal. It is obviously causing some resistance as he window is musch faster without the horrible nails on a blackboard sound. I've had the door card off to look but I can't see anything, it's same on both sides so I've discounted something foreign being stuck down there. Is this common? Any ideas?

Thanks
Tom

Have you checked the rubber seals on either side of the glass?
If they get dry they can have a rough edge to them.
I would lower the windows and clean the rubbers and see if that helps.

I agree. I'd try lubricating the window seals with clear silicon grease. I always keep a tub handy for the door and roof seals too. Bought mine from the local plumbers merchants - it wasn't cheap, but it works for that sort of job. You only need the tiniest amount, don't butter it on, and don't get it near your eyes.

Great thanks,

I'll get on that and report back ASAP. Already I think you've both nailed it as I can't find anything internally that is rubbing.

Thanks again

You were right, getting a good quality lube (Fnarr) has sorted it. The windows run much faster and smoother. After a while they'll screech again and so I'll apply a little more lube. I'll be looking out for replacement seals though as I guess I can only keep doing this for so long.
